IhavebeenaprofessorandCounselorEducatoratNortheasternIllinoisUniversityinboththeCommunityandFamilyCounselingProgramsfor20years,anAdjunctatWheatonCollege,CollegeofDuPage,andArgosy,Schaumburg,andaclinicalsupervisoryfacultyatNorthwesternUniversity’sFamilyInstitute.Ihavebeenatherapistandclinicalsupervisorforthelast43years,atNEIU,mentalhealthagencies,residentialtreatmentcenters,daytreatmentcentersandinindependentpractice.Ihavetaughtthebreadthofalltheclinicalandfamilycounselingcourses,andpublishedextensivelyinmanyareasofcounseling.Myclinicalspecialtiesincludeclinicalsupervision,individual,group,coupleandfamily,sextherapy,andsubstanceabusecounseling,aswellasmultiplemodesofresearch.Iresearch,publishandtrainintheareaofclinicalsupervisionandfamilycounseling,andhaveusedavarietyofqualitativeandquantitativemethodologies.

Thiscourseintroducestheassumptions,theories,andprocessesofqualitativeinquiry.Thepurposeofthiscourseistoprovideadvancedgraduatestudentswiththetheoreticalfoundationsnecessarytounderstandqualitativeinquiry,andtoenhancetheirabilitiestoconductqualitativeresearchandevaluation.

Eachon-campusclassperiodhasthreeseparateperiods.Theyare（butnotnecessarilyinthisorder）1）dialecticallearningwherewewilldiscussmaterialpertainingtothecoursefromthereadingsandelsewhere,viaPowerPointandlecture/discussion;2）introductiontothenextweek’sFieldAssignment;and3）practicepreparationtimeofthenewFieldAssignmentwithquestionsandanswers.

CourseObjectives

Bytheendofthecourse,studentswillbeableto:

1）UnderstandtheuseofqualitativeresearchinthefieldofCounselorEducationandotherSocialSciences,andbeadeptatusingseveraldifferentmethods;

2）.defineandchooseresearchquestions（intellectualpuzzles）andsubquestionsthatqualitativeresearchcanaddress;

3）describedifferentqualitativeresearchapproachesincludingbiography,phenomenology,groundedtheory,ethnography,andcasestudy;

4）identifythedifferentstepsforconductingaqualitativeresearchstudyanddescribethemaincomponentsforeachone;

5）understandcodingandmethodsofevaluationinqualitativeresearch;

6）understandhowtointegratequalitativeresearchwithquantitativemethodstoprovidemulti-venuedresearch;

7）understandethicalissuesrelatedtodoingqualitativeresearch;

8）criticallyevaluateresearchreportedbyothers;and,

9）planandconductaqualitativeresearchstudyusingtheappropriatequalitativeresearchapproach.

3.On-Line–thisclasshasadistinctbutnotdiscreteportionthatbeginsonthefirstdayofcourse（May10th）andendsonthelastdayofthecourse（June30th,2010）.Theon-linerubricwillguideyouastowhatisexpectedonline（seebelow）.
