IhavebeenaprofessorandCounselorEducatoratNortheasternIllinoisUniversityinboththeCommunityandFamilyCounselingProgramsfor20years,anAdjunctatWheatonCollege,CollegeofDuPage,andArgosy,Schaumburg,andaclinicalsupervisoryfacultyatNorthwesternUniversity’sFamilyInstitute.Ihavebeenatherapistandclinicalsupervisorforthelast43years,atNEIU,mentalhealthagencies,residentialtreatmentcenters,daytreatmentcentersandinindependentpractice.Ihavetaughtthebreadthofalltheclinicalandfamilycounselingcourses,andpublishedextensivelyinmanyareasofcounseling.Myclinicalspecialtiesincludeclinicalsupervision,individual,group,coupleandfamily,sextherapy,andsubstanceabusecounseling,aswellasmultiplemodesofresearch.Iresearch,publishandtrainintheareaofclinicalsupervisionandfamilycounseling,andhaveusedavarietyofqualitativeandquantitativemethodologies.

Thiscourseintroducestheassumptions,theories,andprocessesofqualitativeinquiry.Thepurposeofthiscourseistoprovideadvancedgraduatestudentswiththetheoreticalfoundationsnecessarytounderstandqualitativeinquiry,andtoenhancetheirabilitiestoconductqualitativeresearchandevaluation.

Eachon-campusclassperiodhasthreeseparateperiods.Theyare(butnotnecessarilyinthisorder)1)dialecticallearningwherewewilldiscussmaterialpertainingtothecoursefromthereadingsandelsewhere,viaPowerPointandlecture/discussion;2)introductiontothenextweek’sFieldAssignment;and3)practicepreparationtimeofthenewFieldAssignmentwithquestionsandanswers.
CourseObjectives
Bytheendofthecourse,studentswillbeableto:
1)UnderstandtheuseofqualitativeresearchinthefieldofCounselorEducationandotherSocialSciences,andbeadeptatusingseveraldifferentmethods;
2).defineandchooseresearchquestions(intellectualpuzzles)andsubquestionsthatqualitativeresearchcanaddress;
3)describedifferentqualitativeresearchapproachesincludingbiography,phenomenology,groundedtheory,ethnography,andcasestudy;
4)identifythedifferentstepsforconductingaqualitativeresearchstudyanddescribethemaincomponentsforeachone;
5)understandcodingandmethodsofevaluationinqualitativeresearch;
6)understandhowtointegratequalitativeresearchwithquantitativemethodstoprovidemulti-venuedresearch;
7)understandethicalissuesrelatedtodoingqualitativeresearch;
8)criticallyevaluateresearchreportedbyothers;and,
9)planandconductaqualitativeresearchstudyusingtheappropriatequalitativeresearchapproach.

Inmyopinion,graduateschoolatthedoctorallevelshouldfocusonprovidingadvancedskillandtheoryacquisition,andpreparationforreallifeinleadership.Ifyouarestayingcurrent,andkeepyourworkinabinder,youwillknowwheretofindwhatyouneed,ratherthanmemorizingandspittingitbacklater.Impressmewithyourdaytodayworkemployingsincerity,hardwork,greatquestions,collegialityandfinishedproducts,andyouwillhavedoneyourjob.

Classparticipationisvitaltoyourlearningexperience.Asfellowlearners,wecanenhancethegroup'seducationalexperiencebyengaginginthoughtful,criticalbutrespectfuldiscussionduringclass.Missingmorethanoneclasswillloweryourgradebyonefullgradepoint.Missingmorethantwoclasseswillresultinafailinggrade.

Pleasecompleteallassignedreadingssothatyou'llbeabletoparticipatefullyinclassdiscussions.
3.On-Line–thisclasshasadistinctbutnotdiscreteportionthatbeginsonthefirstdayofcourse(May10th)andendsonthelastdayofthecourse(June30th,2010).Theon-linerubricwillguideyouastowhatisexpectedonline(seebelow).

4.Duedatesandincompletes
