辨析ill,sick

ill与sick意思相近,用法稍有差别。

ill通常不用在名词前,而用在动词词组中,如fallill(病倒),betakenill(生病):

HefellillshortlybeforeChristmas(临近圣诞节时他病倒了),Oneofthejurymemberswastakenill(一名陪审团成员病了)。

sick常用在名词前:

sickchildren(生病的孩子)。

英式英语中,ill较sick稍显委婉。

sick常指生病时身体的实际感觉,例如感到恶心或呕吐:

Ispentthenext24hoursinbed,groaningandbeingsick(接下来的24小时我都躺在床上,呻吟着,感到一阵阵恶心)。

英国人用ill的场合美式英语往往用sick:

Somepeoplegethurtinaccidentsorgetsick(有些人在事故中受伤,或者患了病)。

sick常指在生理上,有时也指在精神上有病的。

10.recall(专四)v.想起,忆起;收回,召回

辨析remember,recall,recollect

remember用法较广,多指无意识地回忆起往事,也指通过主观努力去记忆;

recall比remember文雅,指想方设法回忆起某事;

recollect与recall意义相近,指在记忆中搜索、设法想起来,强调过程。

11.ravage(专四)

v.destroy;damagebadly毁坏

robandplunderwithviolence蹂躏;劫掠

with/survivethe~softime经受时间的考验

辨析ravage,plunder,pillage,sack

这些都是对战时征服者的掠夺行为有关的动词。

ravage强调暴力引起的破环,通常是经历了长时间的袭击或侵略,e.g.:

Theinvadingforcesravagedthecountryside.入侵的军队洗劫了这个村子。

plunder指对占领地区大范围的掠夺,e.g.:

Theyplunderedthecityandleftitsinhabitantsdestitute.他们洗劫了整座城市,市民们一下子变得身无分文。

pillage指战时士兵对征服城市或人民的值钱物品进行抢劫和掠夺,e.g.:

Thechurcheswerepillagedbyruthlessinvaders.

sack比pillage语气更重,不仅指对财物的强占,还强调彻底的毁灭,e.g.:

Thearmysackedeveryvillagealongthecoast.军队洗劫了沿海的村庄。
