Accustomedthoughwearetospeakingofthefilmsmadebefore1927as“silent”，thefilmhasneverbeen,inthefullsenseoftheword,silent.Fromtheverybeginning,musicwasregardedasanindispensable（不可缺少的；绝对必要的）acpaniment（伴奏；伴随物）;whentheLumierefilmswereshownatthefirstpublicfilmexhibitionintheUnitedStatesinFebruary1896,theywereacpaniedbypianoimprovisationsonpopulartunes.Atfirst,themusicplayedborenospecialrelationshiptothefilms;anacpanimentofanykindwassufficient.Withinaveryshorttime,however,theincongruity（不协调；不一致；不适合）ofplayinglivelymusictoasolemnfilmbecameapparent,andfilmpianistsbegantotakesomecareinmatchingtheirpiecestothemoodofthefilm.

Asmovietheatersgrewinnumberandimportance,aviolinist,andperhapsacellist,wouldbeaddedtothepianistincertaincases,andinthelargermovietheaterssmallorchestraswereformed.Foranumberofyears,theselectionofmusicforeachfilmprogramrestedentirelyinthehandsoftheconductororleaderoftheorchestra,andveryoftentheprincipalqualification（资格，授权；条件，限制）forholdingsuchapositionwasnotskillortastesomuchastheownershipofalargepersonallibraryofmusicalpieces.

Sincetheconductorseldomsawthefilmsuntilthenightbeforetheyweretobeshown（ifindeed,the

conductorwasluckyenoughtoseethemthen）,themusicalarrangementwasnormallyimprovisedinthegreatesthurry.

Tohelpmeetthisdifficulty,filmdistributingpaniesstartedthepracticeofpublishingsuggestionsformusicalacpaniments.In1909,forexample,theEdisonpanybeganissuingwiththeirfilmssuchindications（指示；象征；表明）ofmoodas“pleasant”，“sad”，“lively”.Thesuggestionsbecamemoreexplicit,andsoemergedthemusicalcuesheetcontainingindicationsofmood,thetitlesofsuitablepiecesofmusic,andprecisedirectionstoshowwhereonepieceledintothenext.

Certainfilmshadmusicespeciallyposedforthem.ThemostfamousoftheseearlyspecialscoreswasthatposedandarrangedforD．WGriffith'sfilmBirthofaNation,whichwasreleasedin1915.
