However,colonizationforcefullybroketheirconnectiontothelandgenerationsago.Indigenouspeopleweredisplacedandtheirculturalpracticesoutlawed.Tensofthousandsofyearsoftraditionallandmanagementended,andasaresultmanypartsofthecountrynowfaceseriousdisastersfrominvasiveplantandanimalspecies,bushfiresandlandmismanagement.

Inrecentyears,thegovernmenthasrestoredmorethan20percentofAustralia’slandtoIndigenousowners.Since2007,theIndigenousRangersOrganizationshavebeenatworkprotectingthisland.

Luck,oneofthefewnon-IndigenousemployeesworkingwiththeRangers,saidthecombinationofoldandnewtechniquesandanappreciationforthecultureofIndigenousworkershasbeencriticaltotheprogram’ssuccess.
