Manyyearsago,inacityinArabia,therewasaboycalledAladdin.Helivedwithhismotherinalittlehousenearthemarker,andtheywereverypoor.Aladdin'smotherworkedallday,andsometimeshalfthenight,butAladdinneverhelpedher.

Hewasalazyboyandhedidnotliketowork.Heonlywantedtoplayallthetime.Everymorningheranthroughthestreetstothemarket.There,hetalkedandlaughedandplayedwithhisfriendsallday.Thenintheeveninghewenthomeforhisdinner.

Andeverynighthismothersaidtohim:

‘Oh,Aladdin,Aladdin!

Youarealazyboy-agood-for-nothing!

ButAladdinneverlistenedtohismother.

Onedayinthemarkettherewasanoldmaninalongblackcoat.Aladdindidnotseehim,buttheoldmanwatchedAladdinverycarefully.Aftersomeminuteshewentuptoanorange-sellerandasked:

Earlythenextmorning,AbanazararrivedatAladdin'shouseandthenheandAladdinwalkedtothemarket.

'Firstofallwemustlookatcoats,'Abanazarsaid.

SoonAladdinhadanexpensivenewcoatandhefeltveryhappy.ThenAbanazarandAladdinwalkedthroughthemarketandlookedattheshops.Theydrankcoffee,talkedtopeople,andhadaverygooddinner.ItwasawonderfuldayforAladdin.

OnFriday,whenthemarketwasclosed,AbanazartookAladdintothebeautifulgardensinthecity.TheywalkedunderthetreesandtalkedaboutashopforAladdin.

‘Youareverygoodtome,Uncle,'Aladdinsaid.

Alanazarsmiled.‘Butofcourse,'hesaid.‘Youaremybrother'sson.Now,letusleavethecityandgoupintothehills.Thereissomethingwonderfulthere,andyoumustseeit.'

Theyleftthegardens,walkedpasttheSultan'spalace,andoutofthecityupintothehills.TheywalkedforalongtimeandAladdinbegantofeeltired.

‘It'snotfarnow,'saidAbanazar.‘We'regoingtoseeabeautifulgarden—morebeautifulthanthegardenoftheSultan'spalace.'

AtlastAbanazarstopped.‘Hereweare,'hesaid.

Aladdinlooked,buthecouldseenogardensonthehills,‘Whereisthisgarden,Uncle?

'hesaid.

‘Firstwemustmakeafire,'saidAbanazar.

Aladdindidnotunderstand,buthemadeafieforhisuncleontheground.ThenAbanazartooksomepowderoutofasmallbox,andputitonthefire.Heclosedhiseyesandsaid,‘Abracadabra!

Atonce,theskywentdark.Blacksmokecamefromthefire,andthegroundunderthefirebegantoopen.Thenthesmokewentaway,andinthegroundtherewasnowabigwhitestonewitharinginit.

Aladdinwasveryafraid.Hebegantorunaway,butAbanazartookhisarmandhithimonthehead.

ForaminuteortwoAladdincouldnotspeakormove.Thenhecried,‘Whydidyoudothat,Uncle?

‘Youmustbeamannow,notachild,'saidAbanazar.‘Iamyourfather'sbrother,andyoumustobeyme.Don'tbeafraid.Inashorttimeyou'regoingtobearichman.Now,listencarefully.'HetookAladdin'shand.‘Onlyyoucanmovethisstone.Putyourhandontheringandsayyournameandyourfather'sname.'

Aladdinwentdownahundredstairsandintothefirstroom.Downhere,itwasnotdarkandhewentquicklythroughtheroomstothedoorintothegarden.Thereweretreesinthegarden,withbeautifulfruitofdifferentcolours—white,red,green,andyellow.

Hesoonfoundthelamp,underoneofthetrees.‘Whydoesmyunclewantthisdirtyoldlamp?

'hethought.Heputitinhispocket.Thenhebegantotakefruitfromthetrees,andtoputitineverypocketofhiscoat.Afterthathewentbacktothestairsandbegantogoup.SoonhecouldseeAbanazarandthebluesky.

‘Givethelamptome,'Abanazarsaid,andputouthishand.‘Quickly,boy,thelamp!

'

Aladdincouldnotgetthelampoutofhispocketbecauseitwasunderthefruit.HelookedatAbanazar'sangryfaceandwasafraid.
