Oneexampleofself-medicationwasdiscoveredin1987.MichaelHuffmanandMohamediSeifu,workingintheMahaleMountainsNationalParkinTanzania,noticedthatlocalchimpanzeessufferingfromintestinalwormswoulddosethemselveswithpithofaplantcalledVeronia.Thisplantproducespoisonouschemicalscalledterpenes.Itspithcontainsastrongenoughconcentrationtokillgutparasites,butnotsostrongastokillchimps(norpeople,forthatmatter;

localsusethepithforthesamepurpose).

Evidenceforthedetoxifyingnatureofclaycamein1999,fromanexperimentcarriedoutonmacawsbyJamesGilardiandhiscolleaguesattheUniversityofCalifornia,Davis,Macawseatseedscontainingalkaloids,agroupofchemicalsthathassomenotoriouslytoxicmemberssuchasstrychnine.Inthewild,thebirdsarefrequentlyseenperchedonerodingriverbankseatingclay.

In1972RichardWrangham,aresearcherattheGombeStreamReserveinTanzania,noticedthatchimpanzeeswereeatingtheleavesofatreecalledAspilla.Thechimpschosetheleavescarefullybytestingthemintheirmouths.Havingchosenaleaf,achimpwouldfolditintoafanandswallowit.Someofthechimpswerenoticedwrinklingtheirnosesastheyswallowedtheseleaves,suggestingtheexperiencewasunpleasant.Later,undigestedleaveswerefoundontheforestfloor.

ItwasDrHuffmanwhogottothebottomoftheproblem.Hedidsobywatchingwhatcameoutofthechimps,ratherthanconcentratingonwhatwentin.Hefoundthattheegestedleaveswerefullofintestinalworms.Thefactorcommontoall19speciesofleavesswallowedbythechimpswasthattheywerecoveredwithmicroscopichooks.Thesecaughtthewormsanddraggedthemformtheirlodgings.
