“Epluribusunum”--thatoutofmany,weareone.Weareremindedthatthiscreed,andAmericaitselfwasneveraninevitability,buttheresultofordinarypeopleineverygenerationdoingtheirparttoupholdourfoundingideals-bytakingtheblessingsoffreedom,andmultiplyingthemforthosewhowouldfollow.

AsPresidentKennedyoncewrote,evenaswegivethanksforallthatwe'veinheritedfromthosewhocamebeforeus-“thedecency(庄重,正派)ofpurpose,steadfastness(坚定)ofresolveandstrengthofwill,forthecourageandthehumility,whichtheypossessed.”wemustalsorememberthat“thehighestappreciationisnottoutterwordsbuttolivebythem.”

Today,wearegratefultoallAmericanswhodotheirparttolivebythoseideals,includingourbravemenandwomeninuniformoverseasandtheirfamilies,whosacrificesomuchtokeepAmericasafe.WearegratefultothecountlessAmericanswhoservetheircommunitiesinsoupkitchensandshelters,lookingoutforthosewhoarelessfortunate,andliftingupthosewhohavefallenonhardtimes.

Thisgenerosity,thiscompassion,thisbeliefthatweareeachother'skeepers,isessentialtowhoweare,notjustonthisday,buteveryday.It'seasytofocusonwhatseparatesus.ButaswegatherwithlovedonesonthisThanksgiving,let'srememberandbegratefulforwhattiesustogether.

Ourloveofcountry.Ourcommitmenttojusticeandequality.OurbeliefthatAmerica'sbestdaysareahead,andthatherdestinyisourstoshape-andthatourinheritedidealsmustbethebirthrightofallofourchildren.
