legendof“America’sadolescencebeforepainsetin”.AndFitzgerald’sotherworks
suchasTheBeautifulandDammedandhismasterpieceTheGreatGatsbynearly
becamethemostdistinguishedbooksfromwhichpeoplecanknowthesocialsituationofthatageclearly.Andhisbooksbecamethelifeguidewhichleadtheyoungreadershaveaclearknowledgeoflife.
IthinkmostofusarenotunfamiliarwithHemingway’sworks.Hisbooksare
alsothesymbolsofthatage.Hemingway’sfirstimportnovelTheSunAlsoRises
attractedagreatdealofattentionafterithadbeenpublished.Hemingway’sbook
paintstheimageofawholegeneration,thelostgeneration.“Thisincludedthisyoung
EnglishandAmericanexpatriatesaswellasmenandwomencaughtinthewarandcutofffromthefromtheoldyoungvaluesandyetunabletocometotermswithnewerawiththenewerawhencivilizationhadgonemad.”(ChangYaoxininhisbookA
SurveyofAmericanLiterature).Inthisbookthepeople’slifeespeciallytheyoung
generation’slifeaftertheFirstWorldWarwasportrayedincisivelyandvividly.Thepeoplewerewonderingthethingslikefishing,swimming,bullfightingandbeautiesofnature.Butmeanwhiletheyacknowledgedthattheworldwascrazyandmeaningless.Thesocialsituationwasmessandchaos.Hemingway’sanotherimportantnovelA
FarewelltoArmsalsoexplainedhowpeoplecometobehavethewaytheydidinthatage.Thisbookcaughtthemoodofthepost-wargeneration.Hemingway’spositionas
awriterwasconfirmedwiththepublicationofthisbook.“Thisnovelportrayeda
farewellbothtowarandtolove.Hemingwayhadrejectedtheromanticidealoftheultimateunityoflovers,suggestinginsteadthatallrelationshipsmustendindeath.”(WuWeiren).So,Hemingway’sworkshavesometimesbeenreadasan
essentiallynegativecommentaryonamodernworldfilledwithsterilely,failure,anddeath.
Allinall,Ithinkwehavetoacknowledgethatthesocialsituationwasthe
biggestreason,whichinfluencedFitzgeraldandHemingway’swritingstyle.Butthat
isnotonlythisreasonthatcausedthedifferencesofFitzgeraldandHemingway’s
writingstyle.Inmyopinion,thewriters’lifestylesaretheimportantreasontoo.

Fitzgeraldlivedinanexpensivestyle.Forhim,wholivedinthemidstofthe“roaringtwenties”andwaspartofitall:
drivingfastcarsdrinkinghardwhisky,andtakinganimmensedelightinit.Threethingseventuallycombinedtobreakhimdown:
loneliness,alcohol,andtheawarenessthathewaswastinghistalent.Fitzgeraldhadalwaysstoodmentallyalooffromthespectaclethatkeptpassingbeforehim.Fitzgeraldwasalwaysaheavydrinker.Healwaystriedtofindthesolaceinhiscups.Itwasalcoholasmuchasanythingthatkilledhimintheend.Fitzgeraldwastormentedvirtuallyallhislifebythefactthathecouldnotconcentrateonthenovelandtheimprovementofhisartingeneral.
NearlyalltheFitzgerald’sbooksarethetruereflectionoftheauthor’slife.
Fitzgerald’slifewaschangedafterhemetZeldawhowasthedaughterofajudge.Zeldawasabeautifulsocialgirl,whotoldFitzgeraldthatshelikedhimwellenoughbutwastooexpensiveforhim.JustliketheprofessorChangYaoxininhisbooksaid:

published.Hewrote,asusual,agreatdealofhimselfintoit.Hereisaworldofparties,andamidboisterous,recklessmerry-making,thereisunmistakableanxietyovermoney,gloomyspiritualbarrennessandahintofdecadenceanddecay.BecauseFitzgeraldputhisownlifeexperienceintohisnovelsandshortstories,hiswritingstyleissmoothandvivid.Forthistheworksthathelefttotheaftergenerationarefullofstrongvitalityandhavedeeplyhistorymarks.Sothesebookscanattractsomuch
attentionandlastedforseveralposterities.Andtheyhavebecomethevaluabletreasureofliterature.
Ontheotherhand,Hemingway’slifewastotallydifferentfromtheFitzgerald’s.
Hemingwaywasamythinhisowntime,andamythinAmericanliterature.“Hewas
aglamorouspublicheroofsortswhosestyleofwritingandlivingwasprobablymoreimitatedthanotherwritersinhumanmemory.”Thatwasthereasonwhyheliked
sportsofallkindsandwasthoughtofasonegoingdeep-seafishing,biggamehunting,becomingaprizeringboxer.Buthislifestylewasevidentlynega
