I.Introduction

FitzgeraldandHemingwayweretwoofthemostdistinguishedwritersinAmericanliterature.Theygrewupinthesameperiodandinthesamesocialsituation.Theirworksarethesymbolsofthatage.Onthewritingstyleandnarrativeskills,HemingwaycreatedthebriefandconcisestylewhileFitzgerald’sstyleissmooth

thsensitive.Theyliketwopeals,whichglitteredinthe20centuryliteraturecircles.

II.Thewritingstylesofthewriters

2.1Fitzgerald’swritingstyle

Fitzgerald’swritingstylewasthesymbolofanage—the1920s,or“thejazzage”,

AmericanLiterature,p293).Fitzgeraldnotonlyportrayedthelifeofonegeneration.Thewords,whichwerecreatedbyhim,havetheimportantpartsofcontemporaryEnglishliteratureandEnglishlanguage.

2.1Hemingway’swritingstyle

Hemingway’sbookspaintedtheimageofawholegeneration—thelost

generation.TherewerealotofcommentsonHemingway’swritingstyle.However,

allseemtoagreeonthesimplicityandapparentnaturalnessofhisprose,anditseffectofdirectness,clarityandfreshness.Hedevelopedaspare,tight,reportorialprosebasedonsimplesentencestructureandusingarestrictedvocabulary,preciseimagery,andanimpersonal,dramatictone.ThisistruethatHemingwayalwaysmanagedtochoosethewordsconcrete,specific,morecommonlyfound,morecasualandconversational,andemployedthemofteninsyntaxofshort,simplesentence,whichareorderlyandpatterned,andsometimesungrammatical.Hemingway’sstrengthlays

III.Theimportantreasons

TherearesomanyreasonsbigorsmallwhichcausedthedifferencesofFitzgerald’sandHemingway’swritingstyle.InthispartIwilluse4mainpartsto

explaintheimportantreasonsthatcausedthedifferencesbetweenFitzgeraldandHemingway.Thesereasonsaresocialsituation,thelifestyle,theattitudetowardthewarandthepersonality.

TheylivedintheworldaftertheFirstWorldWar,whichwasquitedifferentisquitedifferentfrombefore.Alltheoldthingsweregone,andeverythingwasnew.Thedisillusionmentwiththewar,thenewinventions,especiallythenewautomobilechangedthelivesofthepeople.Therewasaffluenceandexcitementontheonehand,andtheother,disturbingindicationsthattheoldworldwassimplydying.AgainstthesocialbackgroundFitzgeraldandHemingwaywrote.Fitzgeraldwasananalyst.HestayedintheUnitedStatesandwroteaboutthejazzage.Hemingway,ontheotherhand,hedidnotdescribeit.HewentawaytoEuropeandwroteabouttheexpatriates.Hisworldwasbasicallyrootless.ItisFitzgeraldwhowassobrokenemotionallybythefailureofAmericandream.Sotheyreacteddifferentlytotheirtimes.Bothweretalentedwriters;bothlosttheabilitytowriteratherearlyintheircareer.HemingwaywasfamousforhisstyleandFitzgeraldforthefactthathetriedtounderstandAmericancultureatitsrootsandthushadmoretosaytothefollowinggenerations.

ThesocialsituationofthatagewasreflectedrespectivelyinFitzgeraldandHemingway’sworks.ThisSideofParadisewasthefirstnovelofFitzgerald.Inthis

novelFitzgeraldsuccessfullyportrayed“agenerationgrowuptofindallgodsdead,

allwarsfought,allfaithinmanshaken.”Fitzgeraldtruedescribedthe“theroaring”of

thepost-warboomyears.Thisbookbecameimmenselypopularforthesimplereasonthatitcaughtthetoneoftheage.Afterthat,Fitzgeraldwroteseveralshortstories,suchasFlappersandPhilosophers.Ourcountry’sfamousprofessorChangYaoxinin

hisbookASurveyofAmericanLiteraturesaidthat,Fitzgerald’sTalesoftheJazzAge

which,likeMarkTwain’thegildedage,giveitsnametoanimportanthistoryperiodinthehistoryofthecountry.The1920sor“thejazzage”,was,inthewordsof

MalcolmCrowley,“notsomuchahistoryperiodasalegendofglitter,ofrecklessness,andoftalentinsuchprofusionthatitwassnowbroadcastlikewildoats”.Itwasa

legendof“America’sadolescencebeforepainsetin”.AndFitzgerald’sotherworks

suchasTheBeautifulandDammedandhismasterpieceTheGreatGatsbynearly

becamethemostdistinguishedbooksfromwhichpeoplecanknowthesocialsituationofthatageclearly.Andhisbooksbecamethelifeguidewhichleadtheyoungreadershaveaclearknowledgeoflife.

IthinkmostofusarenotunfamiliarwithHemingway’sworks.Hisbooksare

alsothesymbolsofthatage.Hemingway’sfirstimportnovelTheSunAlsoRises

attractedagreatdealofattentionafterithadbeenpublished.Hemingway’sbook

paintstheimageofawholegeneration,thelostgeneration.“Thisincludedthisyoung

EnglishandAmericanexpatriatesaswellasmenandwomencaughtinthewarandcutofffromthefromtheoldyoungvaluesandyetunabletocometotermswithnewerawiththenewerawhencivilizationhadgonemad.”(ChangYaoxininhisbookA

SurveyofAmericanLiterature).Inthisbookthepeople’slifeespeciallytheyoung

generation’slifeaftertheFirstWorldWarwasportrayedincisivelyandvividly.Thepeoplewerewonderingthethingslikefishing,swimming,bullfightingandbeautiesofnature.Butmeanwhiletheyacknowledgedthattheworldwascrazyandmeaningless.Thesocialsituationwasmessandchaos.Hemingway’sanotherimportantnovelA

FarewelltoArmsalsoexplainedhowpeoplecometobehavethewaytheydidinthatage.Thisbookcaughtthemoodofthepost-wargeneration.Hemingway’spositionas

awriterwasconfirmedwiththepublicationofthisbook.“Thisnovelportrayeda

farewellbothtowarandtolove.Hemingwayhadrejectedtheromanticidealoftheultimateunityoflovers,suggestinginsteadthatallrelationshipsmustendindeath.”(WuWeiren).So,Hemingway’sworkshavesometimesbeenreadasan

essentiallynegativecommentaryonamodernworldfilledwithsterilely,failure,anddeath.

Allinall,Ithinkwehavetoacknowledgethatthesocialsituationwasthe

biggestreason,whichinfluencedFitzgeraldandHemingway’swritingstyle.Butthat

isnotonlythisreasonthatcausedthedifferencesofFitzgeraldandHemingway’s

writingstyle.Inmyopinion,thewriters’lifestylesaretheimportantreasontoo.

3.2Thelifestyle

Fitzgeraldlivedinanexpensivestyle.Forhim,wholivedinthemidstofthe“roaringtwenties”andwaspartofitall:

drivingfastcarsdrinkinghardwhisky,andtakinganimmensedelightinit.Threethingseventuallycombinedtobreakhimdown:

loneliness,alcohol,andtheawarenessthathewaswastinghistalent.Fitzgeraldhadalwaysstoodmentallyalooffromthespectaclethatkeptpassingbeforehim.Fitzgeraldwasalwaysaheavydrinker.Healwaystriedtofindthesolaceinhiscups.Itwasalcoholasmuchasanythingthatkilledhimintheend.Fitzgeraldwastormentedvirtuallyallhislifebythefactthathecouldnotconcentrateonthenovelandtheimprovementofhisartingeneral.

NearlyalltheFitzgerald’sbooksarethetruereflectionoftheauthor’slife.

Fitzgerald’slifewaschangedafterhemetZeldawhowasthedaughterofajudge.Zeldawasabeautifulsocialgirl,whotoldFitzgeraldthatshelikedhimwellenoughbutwastooexpensiveforhim.JustliketheprofessorChangYaoxininhisbooksaid:

afterFitzgeralddischargefromthearmyearlyin1919,itbecameapparentthathehadnomeansofsupportingthiswomanwithsuchgreatfinancialandsocialexpectations,hehadnowayofmakingafortunebywritingadvertisementinnewYork.Zeldasoonbroketheirengagement.ButwhenThisSaidofParadisewaspublishedZeldaagreed

tomarryFitzgerald.”ThenhissecondnovelTheBeautifulandDammedwas

published.Hewrote,asusual,agreatdealofhimselfintoit.Hereisaworldofparties,andamidboisterous,recklessmerry-making,thereisunmistakableanxietyovermoney,gloomyspiritualbarrennessandahintofdecadenceanddecay.BecauseFitzgeraldputhisownlifeexperienceintohisnovelsandshortstories,hiswritingstyleissmoothandvivid.Forthistheworksthathelefttotheaftergenerationarefullofstrongvitalityandhavedeeplyhistorymarks.Sothesebookscanattractsomuch

attentionandlastedforseveralposterities.Andtheyhavebecomethevaluabletreasureofliterature.

Ontheotherhand,Hemingway’slifewastotallydifferentfromtheFitzgerald’s.

Hemingwaywasamythinhisowntime,andamythinAmericanliterature.“Hewas

aglamorouspublicheroofsortswhosestyleofwritingandlivingwasprobablymoreimitatedthanotherwritersinhumanmemory.”Thatwasthereasonwhyheliked

sportsofallkindsandwasthoughtofasonegoingdeep-seafishing,biggamehunting,becomingaprizeringboxer.Buthislifestylewasevidentlynega
