Unlikeawheelchair,mydisabilitydoesn’tannounceitself.WhenIgotjobs,Ichosetokeepitasasecret.Onedayabusinessfriendsaid,“Nicolette,sometimesinmeetingsyouanswerthewrongquestions.Peopledon’tknowyoucan’thear,sotheythinkyou’restrange,stupid—orjustplainrude.Itwouldbebettertojusttellthem.”ButIknewifItold,peoplemightseeonlymydisability,andtheymightforgetthatIwasalsoawriter,apainter,andagoodgardener.Ifeltdisabledandhelpless.

PolishzoologistWojciechCzechowskiandhisteambeganstudyingtheundergroundcolonyin2013.Theyfoundtheantsbuilta60-cmhighnestinthesoildirectlyoverthestorehouseverticalairpipe.Asyearspassed,themetalcoveringonthepipeeroded,leavingbehindaholethatthousandsofworkerantsaccidentallyslipintoeachdayastheygoabouttheirdailychores.Thescientistssaythattherearenosourcesoffoodinthestorehouse.Thismeansthattheinsectsliveinastateofnearstarvation.

InJuly2015,theresearchersdisturbedpartoftheantnestinsearchoflarvae(幼虫),cocoons(茧),andqueens.Theyfoundnothing,leadingthemtosuspectthatthelackoffoodandcoldtemperaturesmadereproductionimpossibleandthatthegrouptendingthenestisentirelymadeupofnon-reproductivefemaleworkers.Theirpopulationisrefilledeveryyear,byanewrainofunfortunateantsthatslidedownthehole.TheresearcherssaythatwhentheyreturnedinJanuary2016,thenesthadbeenrepaired.Itappearsthatdespitetheterribleconditions,theworkerantsdonotstopconstructingtheirnest.

Woodantsareknownfortheirabilitytoadapttobadlivingconditions.Inthiscase,themillionsofworkerantstrappedinthestorehousehavenochoice.Butinsteadoflosinghope,theyaremakingthebestofthesituation—aclassicexampleof“whenlifegivesyoulesionsmakelemonade.”
