Previousstudieshaveshownadaptivecruisecontrol(ACC)cancompromisedrivingsafetywhendriversdonotunderstandhowtheACCfunctions,suggestingthatdriversneedtobeinformedaboutthecapabilitiesofthistechnology.Thisstudyappliesecologicalinterfacedesign(EID)tocreateavisualrepresentationofACCbehavior,whichisintendedtopromoteappropriaterelianceandsupporteffectivetransitionsbetweenmanualandACCcontrol.TheEIDdisplayrevealsthebehaviorofACCintermsoftimeheadway(THW),timetocollision(TTC),andrangerate.ThisgraphicalrepresentationusesemergentfeaturesthatsignalthestateoftheACC.Twofailuremodes—exceedanceofbrakingalgorithmlimitsandsensorfailures—wereintroducedinthedrivingcontextsoftrafficandrain,respectively.Amedium-fidelitydrivingsimulatorwasusedtoevaluatetheeffectofautomation(manual,ACCcontrol),anddisplay(EID,nodisplay)onACCreliance,brakeresponse,anddriverinterventionstrategies.DriversintrafficconditionsreliedmoreappropriatelyonACCwhentheEIDdisplaywaspresentthanwhenitwasnot,proactivelydisengagingtheACC.TheEIDdisplaypromotedfasterandmoreconsistentbrakingresponseswhenbrakingalgorithmlimitswereexceeded,resultinginsafefollowingdistancesandnocollisions.Inmanualcontrol,theEIDdisplayaidedTHWmaintenanceinbothrainandtrafficconditions,reducingthedemandsofdrivingandpromotingmoreconsistentandlessvariablecar-followingperformance.Theseresultssuggestthatprovidingdriverswithcontinuousinformationaboutthestateoftheautomationisapromisingalternativetothemorecommonapproachofprovidingimminentcrashwarningswhenitfails.Informingdriversmaybemoreeffectivethanwarningdrivers.

TheaerodynamicloadsforMWscalehorizontal-axiswindturbinesarecalculatedandanalyzedintheestablishedcoordinatesystemswhichareusedtodescribethewindturbine.Inthispaper,thebladeelementmomentum(BEM)theoryisemployedandsomecorrections,suchasPrandtlandBuhlmodels,arecarriedout.BasedontheB-Lsemi-empiricaldynamicstall(DS)model,anewmodifiedDSmodelforNACA63-4xxairfoilisadopted.Then,bycombingBEMmodifiedtheorywithDSmodel,asetofcalculationmethodofaerodynamicloadsforlargescalewindturbinesisproposed,inwhichsomeinfluencefactorssuchaswindshear,tower,towerandbladevibrationareconsidered.Theresearchresultsshowthatthepresenteddynamicstallmodelisgoodenoughforengineeringpurpose;theaerodynamicloadsareinfluencedbymanyfactorssuchastowershadow,windshear,dynamicstall,towerandbladevibration,etc,withdifferentdegree;thesinglebladeenduresperiodicalchangingloadsbutthevariationsoftherotorshaftpowercausedbythetotalaerodynamictorqueinedgewisedirectionareverysmall.Thepresentedstudyapproachofaerodynamicloadscalculationandanalysisisoftheuniversity,andhelpfulforthoroughresearchofloadsreductiononlargescalewindturbines.
