1Preface
WhenstartingoperationforGasCleaningPlants(GCP)theinstructionsofthisoperationalHandbookshallbefollowedfromthefirstdayoninordertoavoidunsafeoperation,damagesorundulywearofcomponents.
Besidethenormaloperationtwostart-upsituationswillbeexplained:
Recommissioningafterlongtimeshutdown
Startupaftershortoutage
Forefficientoperationtheinstructionsforstartupsituationsaswellasthemaintenanceobligationsforallcomponentsmustbefollowed.
2FunctionalDescriptionandProcessData
Pre-ScrubberandAnnularGapScrubber
TheBFgasstreamcomingfromthedrygascleaningentersthescrubberfromthetop.Thegasentersthesprayingzoneofthescrubberandpassesthroughthewatercurtainsemittedbytheinjectingnozzles.Thecoarsedustparticlescontainedinthegasstreamareembeddedinthewaterdropletsproducedbythespraynozzles.Thedustladenwaterdropletsarecollectedinthesumpofthesprayingchamberanddischargedtothewatertreatmentplant.
Afterhavingpassedthewatercurtains,thegasispre-cleaned.Acertainamountofthepre-cleanedgascanbeusedforpressurizingofthehopperofthebell-lesstop.
ThekeypartsoftheANNULARGAPSCRUBBERarethePAULWURTHAnnularGapElements.
ATTENTION:
Inordertoachieveanoptimumcleaningefficiencyandminimumofwearitisextremelyimportantthatthedistributionofthegasflowthroughtheannulargapelementhastobeexactlyevenandsymmetric.
Downstreamthesprayingchamber,thegasflowsthroughtheannulargappassage.Here,waterisinjectedontopoftheannulargapelementsbeforethegasflowsthroughtheannulargap.Whenenteringtheannulargapthegasflowisaccelerated.Thehighgasvelocityproducesstrongturbulence,sothatthegasismixedwiththeinjectedwater.Duringthismixing,evenverysmalldustparticlesareembededbythewaterdropletsandremovedfromthegas.PleasealsorefertoFig1below.

Ife.g.thegasstreamisinterruptedduetocloggingofdust,itisobviousthatthewaterfilmontheconeisnotevenlydistributedonthecircumference.Theflowofthegaswillthereforealsonotbedistributedproperlyandhighwearoftheconeisunavoidable.ThisresultsinachangingL/Gratio(massflowofwatertomassflowofgas)overthecircumferenceoftheannulargap.
TheL/Gratiofortheoptimizedcleaningefficiencyis1;i.e.1lofwaterhastobeinjectedper1Nm3ofgas.InthecaseofmisalignmentbetweentheconeandtheventuritheL/Gratiowillbelowerthan1atlocationswithhighergapwidthandhigherthan1atlocationswithlowergapwidthandtheperformanceofthegascleaningplantwouldgetworse
Thedust-ladenwateriscollectedintheannulargapzonesumpandflowstothedemistersump.Fromthereitisrecycledtothespraynozzlesatthetopofthescrubberviarecirculationpumps.Thecleangasthatmaystillcontainfreewaterdropletsleavesthescrubberindirectionofthedemister.
TheDemister
Thegasentersthedemisterfromtop.Theverticaldemisterensurestheoptimizedseparationanddroplets,whichareseparatedatthedemistershell,arenotre-enteringthegasstream.
Thegaspassesthroughvanesthatgivethegasstreamanangularmomentum.Centrifugalforcesmovethewaterdropletscontainedinthegasstreamtothewall.Herethewateriscollectedattheendofthedemisterandflowsdownintothesumpfromwhereitisdrainedtotherecirculationmain.

Forthestart-upofgascleaningplantthefollowingpointshavetobecheckedandrecorded:
∙Foreignpartsintheplant,forinstancemetal-wooden-,plasticmaterial,glasspartsaswellasscrews,wires,bottles,cans,insulatingmaterial,tools,scaffoldetc.havetoberemoved
∙Thepipeworkmustbeflushedandthecleanedfromforeignparts
∙Mudagglomerationordustdepositshavetoberemoved
∙Allmanholes,openingsandinspectionholesmustbeclosedandgastight
∙Thegreasingsystemmustbereadyforoperationandthestuffingboxesoftherodsmustbecheckedfortightness
∙Theshut-offdevicesonthedischargesideofthepumpmustbeclosed
∙Thehydraulicandelectricactuatedwatervalvesmustbecheckedandreadyforoperation
∙Allprimaryshut-offvalvesandotherfittingstomeasurementandinstrumentationmustbeopened
∙Allpumpsmustbereadyforoperation
∙Allmeasuring-,control-andregulationinstrumentsmustbecheckedandreadyforoperation
∙Allrequiredutilitiesandconsumables,likewater,grease,lubricants,nitrogen,steametcmustbeavailableforfillingin
∙Theinertgasconnectionmustbereadyforoperation
4SafetyRequirements
Forsafetyreasonsthesiteshouldbeincleancondition.StairwaysplatformsanddirectsurroundingoftheGasCleaningPlantshallbeclearandscaffoldingandhoistingequipmentshouldberemoved.
TheinsideofthescrubberbottomaswellasallstairwaysplatformsandsurroundingareasoftheGCPneedtobeilluminatedbysufficientlighting.
5Re-CommissioningafterLongTimeShutDown
Afterthemeasuresrequiredunderchapter5havebecarriedoutandtherequirementsforcommissioningofallplantpartsaccordingtotheinstructionsofthemanufacturerarefulfilled,theentireplantcanbeputtingintooperationasdescribedbelow.
Thesafetytechnicalregulationtotheindividualplantcomponentshavetobeconsidered.Toavoidexplosivegasmixturethegas-bearingcomponentsaretobepurgedoxygen-free.Asinertgasisnitrogenorsteamrequired.Theblanketingoftheplantisrequiredbeforefirstcommissioningatleastandalwayswhentheplantforwalkwaysorinspectionismadegas-free.
Theentireplanthastobeputintooperationasfollows:
∙Hydraulicsystem
∙Measuringandcontroldevices
∙Watercyclesystem
∙Gascleaningsystem
RotationControl
Incaseofreplacementofrotatingequipmentarotationtesthastobedonebeforere-commissioning.
Pumpsorotherrotatingequipmentshallbecheckedforrotationdirectionofmotorresp.impeller.Thisistoavoiddamagesandpropercoolingiswarranted.
Thehydraulicpumpsshallbeswitchedononlyforashorttimetopreventdamagesincaseofwrongrotation.
Forwaterpumpsthepumpmanualshallbecheckedtofindoutifitisrequiredbythemanufacturertodisconnectthecouplingtoseparatemotorfromtheimpeller.
Thepumpmanualhastobecheckedinanycaseforadditionaladvisesandfurthermanufacturerdemands.Forinstanceafewgreasingpumpshaveoptionalrotationdirectionbutwithregardtothegeartoothsystemrightrotationisrecommended.
FillingofMedia
Asfaraspipingorcomponentshasbeenrenewedthepipingsystemshouldbeinspectedfortightnessofallflangeconnections.Allpipesshouldhavebeencleanedfromdebrisandflushedbywaterorchemicalsincaseofstainlesssteelmaterialtobepickled.Apressuretestwithwater(oroilincaseofhydraulicpipes)fornewpipesectionsshouldhavebeendonewithallwaterastestmediumdrained.Afterthesetestproceduresmediacanbefilledt
