Themenagreedtohavesevenpublicmeetings,ordebates,insevendifferentcitiesinIllinois.Thatway,votersalloverthestatewouldhaveachancetohearwhateachmanstoodfor.
ThefirstdebatewasinOttawaonAugust21,1858.Themainthingthemendisagreedonwasslavery.Douglasbelievedthatasnewstatesjoinedtheunion,theyshoulddecideforthemselveswhetherornottheywantedtobeaslavestateorafreestate.Lincolnbelievedthatslaveryshouldnotspreadbeyondthestatesthatalreadyhadslaves.HesaidtheUnitedStatescouldnotsurviveashalf-slaveandhalf-freestates.
Thedebatesdrewlargecrowdsinallsevencities.Peopleintheentirecountrywerepayingattention.LincolnlosttheSenaterace.Thedebatesdid,however,makehimwellknowneverywhere.
In1860,itwastimetoelectanewPresident.LincolnwontheRepublicanParty'snomination（提名）.DouglaswontheDemocraticParty'snomination.Thetwomenagainfacedeachothertogetthepeople'svotes.ThistimeLincolnwon.Hebecamethenation's16thPresident.
