ThefirstdebatewasinOttawaonAugust21,1858.Themainthingthemendisagreedonwasslavery.Douglasbelievedthatasnewstatesjoinedtheunion,theyshoulddecideforthemselveswhetherornottheywantedtobeaslavestateorafreestate.Lincolnbelievedthatslaveryshouldnotspreadbeyondthestatesthatalreadyhadslaves.HesaidtheUnitedStatescouldnotsurviveashalf-slaveandhalf-freestates.

Thedebatesdrewlargecrowdsinallsevencities.Peopleintheentirecountrywerepayingattention.LincolnlosttheSenaterace.Thedebatesdid,however,makehimwellknowneverywhere.

In1860,itwastimetoelectanewPresident.LincolnwontheRepublicanParty'snomination(提名).DouglaswontheDemocraticParty'snomination.Thetwomenagainfacedeachothertogetthepeople'svotes.ThistimeLincolnwon.Hebecamethenation's16thPresident.

Theslaveryissuewasstillcausingbadfeelingsbetweenslaveandnon-slavestates.BythetimeLincolntookoverasPresidentonMarch4,1861,sevenstateshadlefttheunion.Amonthlater,theCivilWarbegan.
