Whatisit?
TheRiodeJaneirocarnival,heldannuallyinthemonthofFebruary,isaspectacularcelebrationoflifethatattractsmillionsofpeopleontothestreetsoftheBraziliancity.Thewholecountrystopstowatch,eitherinthecityitselforonthetelevision.Itisestimatedthateachyear700,000visitorscometowatchfromallovertheworld.“Samba”schoolsThemusicplayedthroughoutthecarnivalprocessioniscalledthe“samba”.Manyparticipantsbelongto“samba”schoolswheretheylearntodanceandplaythemusicwhichissopopularthroughoutBrazil.Thereareabout30“samba”schoolswiththousandsofmembers.Theyperformforfourentirenightsinahugearenacalledthe“Sambadrome”.Theschoolstakepartinanofficialcompetitionandthebestofthemisawardedaprize.Eachschoolisassessedonitscostumes,thethemeofitsperformanceandthequalityofthemusic.Some“samba”schoolsholdstreetpartiesandperformintheirlocalareasbecausemanypeoplecannotaffordtobuyaticketfortheofficialcompetition.Fromyeartoyear.Becauseitissuchahugeevent,planningforthecarnivalbeginsmanymonthsinadvance.Infact,itistruetosaythatassoonasonecarnivalfinishes,rehearsalsandpreparationsforthenextonebegin.Muchofthisworkisdonein“SambaCity”,whichconsistsofenormousbuildingswheremostoftheequipmentandcostumesareprepared.ThestarsoftheshowEachschoolisledbyaqueenfollowedbyhundredsofdrummersandbrightlydecoratedcarnivalvehicles.TheCarnivalQueensarethebiggeststarsandtheyarechosenfromamongstthemostbeautifulwomenineachcommunity.Aswellasbeauty,thequeenhastobeveryfittoleadhergroupofdrummersontheslowprocessionthroughthestreetsofRio.“Blocos”parades“Blocos”paradeshavebecomeanimportantfeatureofRioscarnivalinadditiontothe“samba”schools.Theseparadesarelessformalandincludegroupsofmusiciansfromthesameneighbourhoodwhojustwanttosing,danceandhaveagoodtime.Today,theynumbermorethan100andthegroupsincreaseeachyear.TheyalldressincostumesorT-shirtswithspecialthemesorlogos.Beforetheshowtheygatherinasquare,thenparadethroughsectionsofthecity,beforeperformingneartothebeach.Someofthemhaveaparticularplacesuchasacafwheretheyplayanddancetoattractspectators.3UCLES20110511/11/M/J/11Turnover(a)HowoftenistheRiocarnivalheld?

Thechildrencirclethebookshelveswithgreatexcitement.UntiltheDonkeyMobileLibrarybeganitsregulartwo-monthlyvisits,manyofthesechildrenhadneverseenabook.Nowtheywaitforthelibraryeagerly.Despitetheheat,theyallsitquietlyandlistentoYohannesashereadsaloudtothem.“Withoutbooks,educationisverydull,likefoodwithoutsalt.Youcansurvivebutyoucantreallycomealive,”saysYohannes.“Theabilitytoreadisthebasisforgreaterproductivity,betterhealthandlongerlife.Itisequallyimportantinreadinginstructionsonhowtoapplythecorrectamountoffertilisertothecropsinthefieldsandinhowtovoteinanelection.Eventhoughthechildrenlackmaterialgoods,iftheyhavetheadvantageofbookstheycanimagineaworldofpossibilities.”ForhisfirstjobinAmerica,Yohannessuddenlyfoundhimselfworkinginthechildrenssectionofthemainlibrary.Hewassurroundedbybookshehadneverseenbefore,and,forthefirsttimeinhislife,herealisedhowjoyfulandimaginativechildrensliteratureis.Hesays,“IalwaysthoughtofEthiopia.ButhowcouldIbringchildrensbooks,withtheirfascinatingcharacters,tomyhomecountrywhenithadalmostnolibrariestokeepthebooksin?
