Allmaterialimpedestheflowofelectricalcurrenttosomeextent.Theamountofresistancedependsoncomposition,length,cross-sectionandtemperatureofmaterial.ThesymbolofcurrentisΩ.

SimpleElectricCircuit

Afundamentalrelationshipexitsbetweencurrent,voltage,andresistanceintheelectriccircuit.Theremustbeacompletepathforcurrenttoflow.Otherwise,thecircuitopenandthennotwork.

Ohm’sLaw

Therelationshipbetweencurrent,voltageandresistanceisthatcurrentvariesdirectlywithvoltageandinverselywithresistance.

Voltage(E)=Current(I)XResistance(Ω)

Resistance(Ω)=Voltage(E)/Current(I)

Thecorrectanswerofthecorrectvaluesis:

DCSeriesCircuit

Aseriescircuitisformedwhenanynumberofresistorareconnectedend-to-endsothatthereisonlyonepathforcurrenttoflow.

Resistanceinseriescircuit

Thevaluesofresistanceaddinaseries.Ifitisfiveresistanceinaseriescircuit,thentheformulaisRt=R1+R2+R3+R4+R5

Rt=R1+R2+R3+R4+R5

Rt=11k+2k+2k+0.1k+1k

Rt=16.1kΩ

Currentinseriescircuit

Currentisthesameanywhereitismeasuredinaseriescircuit.Forexample,

Voltageinseriescircuit

Voltagecanbemeasuredacrosseachoftheresistorsinacircuit.Thevoltageacrossaresistorisreferredtoasavoltagedrop.Inthefollowingdiagram,fourresistorsof1.5Ωeachhavebeenplacedinserieswitha12Vbattery.

First,solvefortotalresistance,

Rt=R1+R2+R3+R4

Rt=1.5+1.5+1.5+1.5

Rt=6Ω

Second,solveforcurrent,

I=E/R

I=12/6

I=1A

Third,solveforvoltageacrossanyresistor(ifwanttocheckthethirdresistor):

E=2X1.5

E=3V

 

Voltagedivisioninaseriescircuit

Itisoftendesirabletouseavoltagepotentialthatislowerthansupplyvoltage.Todothis,avoltagedivider,similartothefollowingdiagram,canbeused.

First,solvefortotalresistance,

Rt=5+20

Rt=25Ω

Second,solveforcurrent,

I=Ein/Rt

I=50/25

Finally,solveforvoltage,

Resistanceinparallelcircuit

Theparallelcircuitisformedwhentwoormoreresistancesareplaceinacircuitside-by-sidesothatcurrentcanflowthroughmorethanonepath.Iftherearethreeresistorsinaparallelcircuit,theformulasdeterminetotalresistancebelow:

Whenresistorsareplacedinparallelacrossavoltagesource,thevoltageisthesameacrosseachresistor.Thefollowingdiagram:

Currentflowingthroughaparallelcircuitdividesandflowsthrougheachbranchofthecircuit.i.e.Totalcurrentisequaltothesumofthecurrentineachbranch.

Series-ParallelCircuitsarecompoundcircuit.Atleastthreeresistorsarerequiredtofromaseries-parallelcircuit.Thefollowingdiagramsshowtwowaysaseries-parallelcombinationcouldbefound.

Magnetism
