Backgroundinformation:
1.TheOpiumandHongKong
Atthestartofthe19thcentury,HongKongwaslittlemorethanabackwaterinsouthernChina,withnoindicationitwouldonedaybeaworldtradecenter.Bythemiddleofthatcentury,Britain'sdesiretoforceopiumonChinahadresultedintwowars--andthelossofChinesesovereigntyintheterritory.
Intheearly1800s,HongKongwasinhabitedmostlybysubsistencefarmers,fishermenandpirates.Atthattime,China'smajorcontactwiththeoutsideworldwastakingplacefarthernorth,upthePearlRiver,atCanton--orwhatisnowknownasGuangzhou.ItwasinCantonthatoverseastradersfromBritain,theUnitedStatesandelsewherelivedandworkedinasmallenclave,closelyregulatedbyChineseofficials.TradehadmostlybeeninChina'sfavor,untilthewidespreadintroductionofopium,grownmostlyinBritain'sthen-colonyIndia.AnditwasinCantonthattheillegalandhighlyprofitableopiumtradeflourished.
Opiumaddictiongrewtoepidemicproportions,ravagingChinesesociety.TheChingemperorappointedaspecialcommissionerinCanton,withorderstostampouttheopiumtrade.Aweekafterhisappointment,LinZe-xuorderedhistroopstosurroundtheinternationalenclaveinCanton.Hedemandedtheoverseastradersturnoveralloftheiropiumstocks.Afterasix-weekstandoff,thetraderssurrenderedmorethan20,000chestsofthenarcotic.
ThatconfrontationbroughtdemandsforactionfromBritishopiumtraders,includingtwoofthebiggest,WilliamJardineandJamesMatheson.ItalsoprovokedabelligerentresponsefromtheBritishmilitary,andthestartoftheFirstOpiumWar,of1840-1842.
Duringthatwar,onJanuary26,1841,aBritishnavalpartylandedonthenorthwesternshoreofHongKong,raisedtheUnionJack,andformallyoccupiedtheisland.
China'santiquatednavyandarmywerenomatchfortheBritish.TheFirstOpiumWarendedwiththeTreatyofNanking,inAugustof1842.Thattreatypromised,amongotherthings,BritishtradingrightsandprivilegesinfiveChineseports.ItalsocededcontrolofHongKongIslandtotheBritish.Inthewordsofthetreaty,HongKongwas"tobepossessedinperpetuitybyherBritannicMajesty,herheirsandsuccessors".
MostofofficialBritainwassurprisedandamusedbytheEmpire'snewacquisition,aseeminglyworthless,virtuallybarrenrockofanisland.
Lessthantwodecadeslater,anewconflictbrokeoutbetweentheBritishandChina'srulers.TheSecondAnglo-ChineseWar(1856-1860)endedwithanotherBritishvictoryandtheConventionofPeking,whichgaveLondonperpetualcontroloftheKowloonpeninsula,ontheChinesemainlandacrossfromHongKongIsland.
Bythecentury'send,otherEuropeancountriesandJapanhaddemandedandreceivedconcessionsfromChina.ProfessingconcernsaboutthesecurityofHongKong,theBritishalsomadenewdemandsontheChinese--inparticular,a99-yearleaseonwhatisnowcalledtheNewTerritories--landfartherintoChina,beyondtheKowloonPeninsula.
Thatleasebeganin1898,andexpiresonJuly1,1997.

NowaspecialadministrativeregionofChina;formerlyaBritishcolony,locatedonthesouthcoastofChinaontheSouthChinaSea,partofthePacificOcean.
Ithasapopulationofmorethansixmillion.TheareaofHongKongisover1000squarekilometers,consistingofthreeparts—Newterritories,KowloonandHongKongIsland.TheaveragetemperatureofHongKongisabout22℃.TherainyseasonisbetweenMayandJuly.
HongKong,calledtheEastPearl,isoneofthelargesttrademarketsintheworld.Asoneoftheworld'sleadingcommercialcenters,HongKongisalsohometomanyinternationalcorporateofficesandaworld-famoustailoringindustry.
HongKonghascomebacktoChina.TheChinesegovernmentandtheChinesepeoplefirmlybelievethatweareabletokeeptheflourishofHongKongandmakeitstronger.
