1.1DesignReferences

TheGuangdongOlympicStadiumwillbethefirstphaseofthemajorfacilitiesamongsttheproposedGuangdongOlympicCentretobecompletedforthehostingofthe9thNationalGamesofthePeople’sRepublicofChinainGuangzhouin2001,andforthestagingofworld-classsportseventsinfuture.Thecentrewillcoverasiteof975,873m²andincludesnewandredevelopmentofexistingfacilitieswhichatpresentconsistofmatchfieldsforhockey,baseball,handball,shooting,archeryandanequestriancentre,intoacomprehensiveinternationalstandardcentreofferingamainstadiumseating80,000spectators,cyclingtacks,anatatorium,tenniscentre,sports-themedsculpturepark,newcentre,hi-techexchangecentre,athletescentreetc..

TheOlympicStadiumwilloccupyasiteof304,350m²andwillbesituatedinthesouthernzoneoftheOlympicCentre.The80,000-seatarenaincludes600seatsattherostrum,300seatsforthemedia,1,500seatsaccommodatedinboxesontheeastandwestwings,andprovisionsforthedisabled.Thestadiumwillbethevenuefortheopeningceremonies,soccerandtrack&fieldeventsofthe9thNationalGames.Duringnon-competitionperiodsthestadiumwillserveasafacilityforsportstrainingandthestagingofnationalandinternationaleventssuchascelebration,exhibitions,concertsandotheractivities.Thedesigncombinesthecontemporaryspiritwithlocalcharacteristics,andaimstosymbolizetheenergyofGuangzhou’ssocialandeconomicbuildingandaspirationstoattainthestatusofametropolisofvibrancyandcreativityinthe21stcentury.

ThedesignofthestadiumconformstotherelevantbuildingcodesofthePeople’sRepublicofChina,supplementedwhereappropriatebysuitablecodesandthemostup-to-dateexperiencesondesignofsimilarfacilities.Anintegratedapproachwillbeadoptedtoaddressissuesoffire-fighting,trafficplanning,evacuationandcrowdcontrol,barrier-freedesign,seismicdesign,air-raiddefense,sanitationandbuildingautomationetc..

2.1TheSite

IThesiteoftheproposedOlympiccentreisattheintersectionoftheTianheandHuangpudistrictsofGuangzhou,andissurroundedbylow-densitybuildingsandsuchestablishedtouristandgrowthcentreforculturalfacilitiessuchastheAmazingWorld,WondersofAviationthemeparks,ScienceCentreandgolfcourse.Thesiteisimmediatelyofftheinterchangebetweentheeasternringroadtothewest,andtheGuangzhou-Shenzhenexpresswaytothenorth.TheShenzhen-Guangzhourailway,ZhongshanandHuangpuAvenuesaretothesouth.ThesiteiswellconnectedtothecentreofthecapitalandtheothermajorcitiesintheProvince.

IIThestadiumislocatedinthesouthernzoneoftheOlympicCentre.Connectiontotheotherfacilitiesofthecentrewillbeatthenorthandnorth-west.TheStadiumwillbetied-intothecomplexofthecentrebyexternallinkagesonothersides.Vehicularaccesspointsarelocatedonthewestandsouth-east,andthemainaccessisfromthesouth.Thesiteisbasicallyflatwithnoexistingbuildingsorstructures.

2.2SitePlanning

IThebuildingisorientedonanorthsouthaxistoalignwithvehicularaccessandviewcorridorsalignedwithmajorarchitecturalfeaturesofthestadium.Thereisaringroadthatallows360degreecirculationandfreeaccesstothestadiumentriesfromvariouspoints.Thelooproadiswideenoughtoaccommodatesixlanesoftraffic.Therearemultipledrop-offzonesforthepublic.

IITheentirestadiumisrecessed8metersfromgrade.Thisreducestheheightofthestadium,enhancingitsoverallappearance.Thisallowsthepublictoengagethemainconcourselevelofthestadium.Therearetwomainplazaareas（eastandwest）forgatheringandcelebrationbeforeduringandaftertheevent.

2.3TrafficPlanning

IThesiteisbasicallyalignednorthtosouth.Inlinewiththeestablishedandplannedtrafficpatterns,theconnectiontothetransportnetworksarelocatedatthewesternandsouthernperipheryandincludes3vehicularingressandegresspoints,andthemainaccessforspectators.

IITheexistingtransportnetworkconsistsofthemaintrunksoftheGuangyuanRoad,theGuangzhou-ShantouHighway,theEasternCityRingRoadexpressway,Guangzhou-ShenzhenRailwayandthedistrictrailway.Thetraffic-planningfortheprojectconcernthesuitableinterfacingwiththeextensionofGuangyuanRoad,DongshaRoadandtheplannedroadtotheeast,branch-connectionfromtheGuangzhou-ShenzhenRailwayandthesafe,efficientmovementsofupto80,000spectators.

IIIAmplecar-parkingintegratedwiththeinternalcirculationrouteswillbeprovidedwithinthesitetomeetdemandsduringeventsaswellasnon-eventgeneralusesofthefacilitiessuchasfortraining.

IVThe3vehicularaccessarelocatedatthesouthconnectingwithDongpoRoad,atthenorth-westconnectingwithDongshaRoad,andviaacircularroadatthesouth-eastconnectingwiththeextensionofGuangyuanRoad.Thesouthisthemainspectatoraccesswhichisservedbyalargepublictransportterminus.AnindependentaccessformDongsharoadisprovidedfortheatheletes’andVIP’ssecurityandconvenience.Withinthecentre,onewaytrafficwillbemaintainedandpedestrianswillbeseparatedfromvehiculartraffictominimizeconflict,andtopromoteorderlyandefficientroaduse.Thecentrecomplexwillbedesignedtobebarrier-freeforthedisabled.
