ThethemeofDavidCopperfield

Introduction:

TheCharlesDickens’snovelDavidCopperfieldisanovelwritteninfirst-personpointofview,whichportraystheDavidCopperfieldgrown-upcourse.Thenovelimpliedtheauthor’sunusuallifeexperience.Meanwhile,DavidCopperfield’destinysymbolizedthemiddle-classintelligentsiaquestingforroadsdevelopmentin19thCenturyBritishsociety.

Body:

ThestorydealswiththelifeofDavidCopperfieldfromchildhoodtomaturity.DavidCopperfieldwasbornonEngland,andsixmonthlaterhisfatherdied,whichdestinedhismiserylife.

Whenhewassevenyearsold,hismothermarriedanotherman,andthatmanbroughtadaughter.Hestruggledagainsthisstepfatherandhismiserydestiny.Tillthenhismotherdied.Andnow,DavidhasnobodylefttocareforhiminLondon,anddecidestorunaway.HewalksallthewayfromLondontoDover,tofindhisonlywell-knownrelative,JosephRichardBaker.ThestoryfollowsDavidashegrowstoadulthood,andisenlivenedbythemanywell-knowncharacterswhohemeetsinCanterbury.AlsohisstepfatherwantstogethisguardianshipforDavidCopperfield,butfailed.

Inthewholestory,theauthorportraysthegrowthofDavidanddepictsothercharacters.Whenhewasyoung,hehadtofightagainstthestepfatherabuse.Afterhegrownup,heneededtofightforliving.Throughtheseportrayals,thethemeofexploitationwasexhibited.

Ineverysociety,therearethosewhoexploitthepoorandtheweakformaterialorsocialgain,orforperversepleasure.Suchexploitationwasaseriousproblemin19thCenturyBritishsociety,andDickenscallsattentiontoitinmanyofhisnovels,includingDavidCopperfield.AnotableexampleofsuchexploitationisEdwardMurdstone’semploymentofchildreninthewarehouseheoperateswithGrinby.DavidCopperfield,MickWalker,andMealyPotatoes–thoughnotevenadolescents–mustworklong,hardhoursformeagerpay.Mr.Creaklealsoexploitschildren,forhetakespleasureininflictingpainonthedefenseless.SteerforthexploitstheinnocentEmily,usinghisworldlycharmtopersuadehertorunawaywithhim.

Atthemeantime,theauthorshowedthespiritofperseveringagainstadversity.PerseverancewithhumorandhopeenablesDavidCopperfieldtoovercomeformidableobstacles.WilkinsMicawberalsoprevailsagainstadversity,thankstohisundyingoptimism.Inaddition,DanielPeggottydoesnotgiveuponEmilyeventhoughshehasbecomea"fallen"woman.

Conclusion:

Critically,thenovelisconsideredasaBildungsroman,anovelofself-cultivation,andwouldbeinfluentialinthegenre.Generallyspeaking,theauthordevotesallhisefforttopresentthemiddle-classintelligentsiaquestingforroadsdevelopmentin19thCenturyBritishsociety.

TheOedipusComplexin"SonsandLovers"

TheOedipuscomplexhasbeenwidelyregardedas“deeplyrootedandwasreflectedwithpassioninthenovelsonsandlovers”(Tian,1998;He,2007;Zhou,2007).IbelievethatthenoveldidreflecttheOedipuscomplex.However,IdonotthinkitissoundtojudgePaulhasthiscomplextowardshismotherwhenhewasalittleboy.Thepsychologicalfeaturesofchildrenshouldalsobeconsideredintheanalysis.

Sonsandlovers,themostpopularmasterpieceofd.h.Lawrence,islargelyautobiological.NumerousresearchershaveexploredthecomplicatedrelationshipsamongthecharacterswiththehelpofFreud’spsychologicaltheory.TheprevailingopinionisthatPaulandhismother’srelationshipisbeyondthenormalson–motherrelationship,whichiscalled“Oedipuscomplex”accordingtoFreud’stheory.

ThenameOedipuscomplexwasgivenbyFreudbasedontheGreekstoryofOedipuswhokilledhisfatherandmarriedhismother.Thegreatpsychologistemployedthisnametodescribethephenomenonthatachild’sattachmenttotheopposite–sexparentbecomessexualized,sothatthechildwishestoposseshimorherandgetridoftheotherparent(Tian,1998).Afterreadingtherelativearticles,IfoundmostoftheresearcherscountedlittlePaul’sattachmenttohismotherwhenhewasaboutsixyearsoldastheresultoftheOedipuscomplexandIdon’tthinkitisright.Inthefollowingsections,Iwillstatemyopinionwiththepresenceofsomefragmentsfromthenovel.

ManyresearchersusedthefollowingfragmenttoexplainthatlittlePaulhastheOedipuscomplextohismother.Thefragmentswillbedividedintotwoparts.ThefirstisaboutlittlePaul’sloveforhismotherandthesecond,hishatredtohisfather.

First,theloveforhismother.

However,tome,littlePaul’sattachmenttohismotherandhatredtohisfatherstillwithinthenormalson–motherrelationship.

First,Iwillexpressmyviewonhisattachmenttohismother.Inthenovel,littlePaul’sagewasaboutsixtotenyearsold.Asadedicatedchild,hewasnaturallyreceivedmorecarefromhismother.So,hespentmostofthetimewithher.Itisachild’snaturetoinclinehisfondnessandreliancetotheonewhonurseshimforthelongesttime.Itisalsoprobablythatwhenoneisweak,especiallythechildren,hefeelslikehavingsomeonetonursehimgently.Therefore,itwasreasonableforsicklittlePaultolongforhismother’stendandcomfortinsteadofthetouchyfather’sandhisrejoicingwhensleptwithhismother.However,thesewereregardedasPaul’ssexualrealizationtowardshismom.What’smore,inachild’seye,theonewhotendshimisthemostbeautifulcreaturesunderthesun,justaswecallourmotherthemostbeautifulandgreatestpersonintheworld.Inthissense,itisnotsoundatalltojudgelittlePaullookedathismotherwithalover’seyeinthescenePaulwassickandliedonthebed.

Second,myviewonhishatredtohisfather.Hypersensitiveashewas,Paulwasabletosensewhatwastheoriginofhismother’sanxietyandunhappiness.Helovedhismotherandwantedtoprotecther.Therefore,hewouldnaturallyhatethecauseofallhismother’smisfortunes---hisfather.ThemadnessofhisfathercamebackhomedrunkenlydidnotonlyhurtMrs.Morelbutspeciallythechildren.Wecanpicturehowalittlesensitiveboyfeelswhenthedrunkenfathercamehomewithsevereness,insultingandbeatinghismother,scoldingthemchildrenforevenslightestmatters.Theatmospherewasoppressedwhenthefatherwashome.Thisofcauseinjuredthelittleboy’ssensitiveheart.Theimperfectorwecanevencallitbrokenrelationshipbetweentheparentshurtthelittleboyunconsciously.Inthisway,wecouldnotignorethattheinjurebroughtbyhisfatheralsocontributedasamaindirectfactortothehatredofthesontothefather,notmerelyjust“thelovetohismotherandsothatwishedhisfatherdie”(Tian,19898).However,mostofthearticlesdidn’tmentionthis.TheysimplyemployedthesefragmentsastheresultofOedipuscomplex.

JaneEyrewasveryhappy,butshealwaysmissedMrRochester,shedecidedtogobackandfoundhim.
