摘要

面对着在特定情况下涌现的大量网络流行词汇,翻译者和学者越来越重视汉语网络词汇和其翻译的研究。

然而,由于缺乏相关的理论依据,加之有关汉语网络流行词汇英译研究的书籍和文章不多,导致在汉语网络词汇的英译过程中存在显著的问题。

网络流行词汇的误译主要是两个因素:

其一是网络流行词汇本身固有的文化特性会给英译带来许多困难;

其二是缺乏统一标准或理论指导导致一词多译现象。

因此,本论文以奈达的功能对等翻译理论作为理论框架,提出了几种可行的翻译策略。

同时,本文指出在翻译目的不同,翻译情景各异的情况下,译者应该灵活应用翻译策略以便更好的实现与西方国家间的跨文化交流。

Abstract

FacingthegreatquantityofChineseonlinebuzzwordsemergingundercertaincircumstances,translatorsandscholarsattachgreatimportancetothestudyonChineseonlinebuzzwordanditstranslation.However,becauseoftheshortageofenoughrelevanttheoriesandthelackofbooksandarticlesrelatedtotheresearchonC-EtranslationofChineseonlinebuzzwords,therearestillmanyconsiderableproblemsintheprocessoftranslation.ThemainreasonsforthefailuresinthetranslationofChineseonlinebuzzwordsrefertotwokeyfactors:

oneisthecharacteristicsofChineseonlinebuzzwords,whichbringuslotsofdifficultiesintranslating.Anotherfactoristhatthereisnostandardtranslationguidanceorprincipleforustofollow,whichleadstothevarioustranslatedversionsofthesameword.

Therefore,thispaperputsforwardtranslationstrategiesbytakingE.A.Nida’sfunctionalequivalencetheoryasthetheoreticalframework.Meanwhile,thethesisemphasizesthattranslatorsshouldemployflexiblythetranslationstrategiestoservedifferenttranslationsituationsinordertodobetterinthecross-culturalcommunicationwithforeigncountries.

1Introduction

Thischapteristopresentageneralpictureofthestudy.Itincludesfoursections,thatis,researchbackground,purposeandvalue,methodsandthesisstructureofthestudy,allofwhichistomakereadersknowthepaperclearly.

1.1ResearchBackground

Afterenteringtheinternetage,people’scommunicationwayshavepresenteddramaticchange.especiallywiththeriseofnewsocialnetwork,suchastwitter,Renren,Facebookandsoon.Chineseonlineneologismsareemerginginlargenumbers.Thesehotonlinewordsnotonlyspreadrapidlyamongvariouswebsitesbutalsoareusedwidelyinpeople’sdailylife,evenappearinchina’sauthoritativenewspapers.

Aswecansee,Chineseonlinebuzzwordshasbecameamirrorreflectingournation’spolitics,economy,culture,people’slivelihood,tonameafew.Wecan’tresistthefashion.Meanwhile,throughChineseonlinebuzzwords,foreignfriendscanknowbetteraboutthetrendsofthelatestsocialcultureofchina.Therefore,Chineseonlinebuzzwordsshouldbesubsumedintheframeworkoftranslationstudies.TranslatingChineseonlinebuzzwordsintoenglishisaconcernednewtaskforscholarsandtranslators.

1.2PurposeandSignificance

Withtherisingofchina’sstatusintheworld,moreandmorewesternpeoplebecomeinterestedinwhatishappeninginchinaandwhatChineseinternetcultureis.Chineseonlinebuzzwordsisbothaproductandimportantcarrierofsocialculture.Manyonlinehotwordsreflectchinahotsocialevents.Undersuchcircumstances,makingareasonableandacceptabletranslationforforeigncountriescanpromotecross-culturalcommunicationaswellasenrichChineseuniquevocabularies.

Besides,agreatmanynetizensactivelydiscusstheC-Etranslationofonlinebuzzwords,thereforemanywordscanfindtheirenglishversionsontheinternet.However,accordingtoauthor’sresearch,someChinesebuzzwordshavemorethanoneenglishversionsandtherearelotsofmistranslation,toosimpleliteraltranslationinthetranslationprocess.SothestudyoftranslatingChineseonlinebuzzwordsintoenglishfromtheperspectiveoftheequivalencetheoryhasitspracticalsignificance.Theequivalencetheoryoffersthemostadequatefeasiblerulesandprincipleswhichareperfecttoourtranslation.What’smore,itcanenrichthecurrentstudyonthetranslationtheory.Therefore,theresearchcontentisofimportantapplicationvaluebothintheoryandpractice.

ThispaperaimstotranslatorsdealbetterwiththeemergingChineseonlinebuzzwords.

1.3ResearchMethods

ThepapertriestoselectthemostimpressiveandrepresentativeChineseonlinebuzzwordsinthenearlyseveralyearsasobjectsofthestudy,whatareseenfromfamousdictionariessuchasChinese-EnglishBuzzwordsDictionaries(LiXuemei,2010:

1~451)[1],newspaperssuchasChinaDaily,People’sDaily,magazinessuchasEnglishLanguageLearning,ChineseTranslatorsJournal,andradioandtelevisionmediasuchasCCTVNEWS,VOA,BBC,aswellaswhataresearchedfromwell-knownEnglishlearningwebsites,suchasWWW.,Besides,thetranslationmethodsofChineseonlinebuzzwordsunderfunctionalequivalencetheoryarealsoincluded.

Thispaperanalyzes,classifiestheChineseonlinebuzzwordsinvolvinginpolitics,economics,culture,entertainmentandsociallife.Inaddition,theauthortakestheequivalencetheoryasthetheoreticalframework,formulatingitscorecontent.Methodsofanalyzing,antithesesandexemplificationareadoptedinthispaper.Theauthoralsopayattentiontothecombinationofsystematicobservationanddetailedexplorationtostudythetopic.

1.4ThesisStructure

Thisthesisadoptsthestructuralpatternof“problem-solution”,basedonagiventheorydirectingthewholestudyandiscomposedoffiveparts,includingtheintroductorypart,bodypartandconcludingpart.Thedetailedstructureofthisthesisispresentedasfollows:

Intheintroductorypart,itgivesabriefintroductiontothestudy,includingbackground,significanceandpurpose,themethodsaswellastheorganizationofthethesis.

Inthebodypart,threesectionsaretobewritten.Chineseonlinebuzzwords,theequivalencetheoryandChinesenetbuzzwordstranslationbasedonthefunctionalequivalencearetobeincluded.

TheChineseonlinebuzzwordssectionwillgivethedefinition,featuresandclassificationofChineseonlinebuzzwords.

“theequivalencetheory”sectionstartstodealwiththetheoryadoptedinthecurrentstudy,namely,thefunctionalequivalencetheoryandtheprinciplesneededintranslationaccordingtothetheory.

InthesectionofChinesenetbuzzwordstranslationbasedonthefunctionalequivalence,itistopresenttheproblemsintranslatingChineseonlinebuzzwordsintoEnglishandthestrategiesofproperlytranslatingChineseonlinebuzzwordsintoEnglishaccordingtotherequirementsoffunctionalequivalencetheory.

Intheconcludingpart,itgivesanoverallpictureaboutthepaper.ThispartpresentsrequirementfortranslatorsintheprocessoftranslatingChineseonlinebuzzwordsandthenthelimitationandthefurtherexpectationofthestudy.

2ChineseOnlineBuzzwords

theviewsoninternetslangsandthetranslationofChineseonlinehotwords.Forexample,anarticlefromJOURNALOFLANZHOUINSTITUTEOFEDUCATION(TangJinlian,2012)[2]exploreanddiscussthetranslationmethodsdirectly.Thesearticlesofferreferencevalueforlaterscholarsaswellastheirownresearchachievement.However,somedissertationsdon’tanalyzeindepth.What’smore,thedefinitionofChineseonlinebuzzwordsisacontroversialtopicinthelinguisticcircle.

Therefore,thischapteraimstopresentaconciseintroductiontoChineseonlinebuzzwords,includingitsdefinition,characteristicsandclassification.
