I.ImportanceofPracticalEnglishWriting

AstheInternetenterstheaveragehome,EnglishhasbeenreceivinggreaterandgreaterattentioninChina.AlthoughEnglishhasbeentaughtinChinaasaforeignlanguagefordozensofyears,moststudentsseemtolearnEnglishforexaminationsonly.Theymightbeskilledinreading,butfewcanspeakfluentEnglishorwritewellforpracticalpurposes.That’soneofthemainreasonsweshouldlearnpracticalEnglishwriting.

Anotherreasonisthat,asEnglishmajors,youwillhavetogetpreparedforfutureworkandstudies.Whenyouwanttogoabroadforadvancedstudies,youwillhavetoproducemanydocuments,includingforms,resumeandletters.Whenyoumeetstrangers,youmaysendthempersonalcardsforfurthercontact.WhenyoutravelinEnglish-speakingcountriesorguideaforeignsightseeingtour,youshouldpresentthemwithanEnglishtouristguidebook.WhenyouareaskedtowriteEnglishdocumentsfordifferentpracticalpurposes,youshouldbeabletodothat.Andsoonandsoforth.

Athirdreasonisthatpracticalwritingisquitedifferentfromgeneralwriting.Ithasseveralcharacteristicsofitsown.Thisiswhattheteacherwillhelpyoutogetfamiliarwith,withtheresultthateachofyoucanwritewellforpracticalpurposes.

II.VarietiesofEnglish

Languagevariesinformandstructurefromplacetoplace,fromtimetotime.SuchchangesindifferentsituationsarereferredtoasvarietiesofEnglish.Bysituations,Englishcanfallintoformalandinformal;byplaces,EnglishcanfallintoBritishEnglishandAmericanEnglish,evenChineseEnglish;bylevelsofliving,Englishcanfallintomanylevelscharacteristicofspecialsocialclasses;byfunctions,EnglishcanbedividedintoscientificEnglish,legalEnglish,religionEnglish,literature,newsreport,advertisements,etc.;andbytime,EnglishcanalsobedividedintoOldEnglish(449-1100),MiddleEnglish(1100-1500)andModernEnglish(1500-).

III.PracticalEnglishWriting

WhenwespeakofpracticalEnglishwriting,werefertothevarietiesofEnglishforpracticalpurposes.Asweknow,Englishfallsintotwofundamentaltypes:

writtenEnglishandoralEnglish.PracticalEnglishwriting,inabroadsense,belongstotheformer,butitisnon-literature.Inpractice,practicalEnglishwritingisonlypartofnon-literaturewrittenEnglish.Itisgenerallyreferredtoasthosecommonwrittendocumentsforspecialpurposesandinregularforms.AmongthepracticalEnglishwriting,thecommonareasfollows:

personalorbusinessletter,notice,telegram,telex,contract,advertisement,etc.

Inaddition,somelargetypesofPEWwillnotbeincludedinourcourse,andwillbedealtwithasanindependentcourse.TheyarebusinessEnglish,touristEnglishandacademicEnglishthesiswriting,etc.

IV.CharacteristicsofPracticalEnglishWriting

Justasitsnameimplies,practicalEnglishwritinglaysemphasisonpractice.ItisthispracticabilitythatdistinguishesitfromeitherspokenEnglishorliteraturecomposition.ThecharacteristicsofpracticalEnglishwritingincludethefollowing.

OnefundamentalcharacteristicofpracticalEnglishwritingisthateachtypehasaregularform.Asstylizeddocuments,practicalwritingisbothstandardandstable.

Anotheroneisitssimplicityinstyle.Differentfromliterature,practicalwritingpaysspecialemphasisonwhatismeanttotransmit.Exceptforsuchspecialdocumentsascontracts,practicalwritingissimpleinstyle.

Athirdcharacteristicliesinitsbriefnessinform.Therapidpaceischaracteristicofmodernworkandlife.Therefore,peoplehavebeenpayingmoreandmoreattentiontoefficiency.Tosavetime,peopleusuallyputcomplexthoughtintosimplewordsbybriefforms.

 

Unit2Note-Writing

Note-writingiswhatisrequiredinTEM-4,inwhichanoteofabout50-60wordswillbebasedonthegivensituation.Wewritenotesforallkindsofpurposes,andnote-writingvariesfromtypetotype.Generallyspeaking,anoteissomethinglikeashortletter,butsimplerinformandoftenlessformalinlanguage.

²      Themessagewhichthenoteiswrittentoreveal

²      TheNameoftheWriter(Certainlythenotewillhavetotellwhowritesit.)

II.KeyFeaturesofNote-Writing:

²      Simpleinform(Anoteinvolvesfewelementsandusuallytakesuponlyafewlines.Inspelling,weoftenusetheabbreviatednamesofthemonths;thegivennameandfamilynameareseldomusedtogether,i.e.,eitherisOK.)

²      Informalinstyle(Herepolitegreetingsareunnecessary,i.e.,weusuallyaddresssomebodydisrespectfullybynamewithoutanhonorifictitle.Weseldomuse“Dear”,“Sincerelyyours”.)

²      Briefandpreciseincontent(Ontheonehand,onlythekeypointsareincludedinanote,inwhichtowriteistoexpress.Ontheotherhand,themessagemustbepreciseinexpression,especiallywhenexactnumbersareinvolved,e.g.,timeandphonenumber.)
