Butwhilethemicro-helicopter’sbladeskeptpacewiththeaveragehummingbirdwings,theycouldnotkeepupwiththemostefficienthummingbird’swing.ThewingsofAnna’shummingbirdwerefoundtobeabout27percentmoreefficientthantheman-mademicro-helicopter’sblades.
WhileProfessorLentinkwasn’tsurprisedatnature’ssuperiority,hesaidthathelicopterbladeshavecomealongway.“Thetechnologyisatthelevelofanaveragehummingbird,”hesaid.“Ahelicopterisreallythemostefficienthoveringdevicethatwecanbuild.Thebesthummingbirdsarestillbetter,butIthinkit’samazingthatwe’regettingcloser.It’snoteasytomatchtheirperformance,butifwebuildbetterwingswithbettershapes,wemightmatchhummingbirds.”
