DavidLentink,anassistantprofessoratStanfordUniversityinCalifornia,testedwingsfrom12differentspeciesofhummingbirds,whichhesourcedfrommuseums.Heplacedthemonamachineusedtotesttheaerodynamics（气力学）ofthehelicopterblades（桨叶）.ProfessorLentink’steamusedthesamemachinetotestthebladesfromanadvancedmicro-helicopterusedbytheUK’sarmy.Theyfoundthatthemicro-helicopter’sbladesareasefficientathoveringastheaveragehummingbirds.

Butwhilethemicro-helicopter’sbladeskeptpacewiththeaveragehummingbirdwings,theycouldnotkeepupwiththemostefficienthummingbird’swing.ThewingsofAnna’shummingbirdwerefoundtobeabout27percentmoreefficientthantheman-mademicro-helicopter’sblades.

WhileProfessorLentinkwasn’tsurprisedatnature’ssuperiority,hesaidthathelicopterbladeshavecomealongway.“Thetechnologyisatthelevelofanaveragehummingbird,”hesaid.“Ahelicopterisreallythemostefficienthoveringdevicethatwecanbuild.Thebesthummingbirdsarestillbetter,butIthinkit’samazingthatwe’regettingcloser.It’snoteasytomatchtheirperformance,butifwebuildbetterwingswithbettershapes,wemightmatchhummingbirds.”
