Distantindeedseemthedayswhenthetwogreatcommercialaviation,BoeingandAirbus,wouldusebigairshowstotrumpethundredsofneworders.Thisyear'sParisAirShowwasamuchmoresombreaffair,eveniftheBoeing-Airbusfeudstilltookcenterstage.
Therewereoneortwobrightspots.Airbuswasabletoboastofafirmorderfortenofitswide-bodyA35OsfromAirAsiaX.JohnLeahy,itstopsalesman,expectsdeliveriesin2009tomatchtherecord483in2008.Boeing,whichwashitbyaprolongedstrikelastyear,willprobablydelivermoreaircraftthisyearthanlast.Bothfirmsbuiltuphugebacklogsinthefatyears:
eachhasordersforabout3,500planes.
Butmanyofthosemaysoonevaporate.GiovanniBisignani,thebossofIATA,thetradebodythatspeaksformostairlines,gavewarningearlierthismonththathismembersmightdeferasmanyas30%ofaircraftdeliveriesnextyear.Healsoalmostdoubledhisforecastfortheindustry'scumulativelossesin2009,to$9billion.
BothMr.LeahyandJimMcNemey,thechiefexecutiveofBoeing,thinkthatMr.Bisignaniisoverdoingthegloom.Buttheyconcedethat-potentialcustomersmayfindpurchaseshardtofinance.Anotherissueisthec6stoffuel.Mr.McNemeythinkstherecentincreaseintheoilpriceshouldencouragecarrierstoreplaceelderlygasguzzlerswithefficientnewplanes.Butiftheprice"spikesover$100"allbetsareoff.

Moreover,bothBoeingandAirbusareconservingcashfbralongandbitterscraptodominatethemarketfbrlong-haulaircraftwithupto350seats.Boeing5stroubled787Dreamlinerwillatlasttaketotheairthismonth,twoyearslate.Theproductionproblemsthatstemmedfromboththerevolutionaryuseofcompositesandanextendedglobalsupplychainappeartohavebeenovercome.Tospeedupdeliveriesofthe787,fbrwhichBoeinghasreceivedmorethan860orders,Mr.McNemeyisplanningasecondassemblyline.
Thedelaystothe787havebeenagodsendfbrAirbus.Itsrival,theslightlybiggerA350,isontracktoflyinearly2012afterapainfulgestation.Withnearly500orders,AirbusclaimsthattheA350issellingevenfasterthantherecord-breaking787didatthesamestageinitsdevelopment.ThebiggestconcernfbrBoeing,however,isnotthattheA350willtakesalesfromthe787,butthatitslargestvariant,theA350-1000,willbeastrongrivaltoitssuccessful777.Mr.McNemeysaysthatBoeingcanaffordtowaitandseehowgreatathreatthebiggestA350is.ButaccordingtoAirbusexecutives,Boeingwillbefacedwiththedilemmaofmerelyupgradingthe777ortakingthebiggerandmorecostlystepofbuildingareplacement.
TheA350andthe787areattheheartofthelong-runningandacrimoniousdisputebetweenBoeingandAirbusattheWorldTradeOrganization(WTO)overstatesubsidiesfbrlargecommercialaircraft.ThisweekEuropeangovernmentsdeclaredthattheywerereadytocontribute3.5billion($4.9billion)ofreimbursablelaunchaidtothe11billioncostofdevelopingtheA350.TheannouncementhadBoeingexecutivesscurryingtotheirBlackBerrystocondemnwhattheysawasa"provocative"movegiventhattheWTOisexpectedtoissuearulingonBoeing'scomplaintwithinweeks(arulingonacounter-complaintbyAirbusisduelaterintheyear).
