作为一个伟大的现实主义作家,狄更斯认为“恶者必亡”,他的小说因此又有强烈的批判精神,并充满了“惩恶扬善”、“爱总能战胜恨”的理想主义色彩。

《雾都孤儿》是查尔斯·

狄更斯第一部重要的反映社会问题的小说。

南希,虽为文中的一个次要人物,在小说的发展中却有不可替代的作用。

她徘徊于善恶之间,是整个故事圆满结局的关键人物。

南希这一人物有着无比丰富、复杂的内心世界,具有典型的双重性格,她不像小说中的其他人物一样表现出或者好或者坏的某一面,而是在某些时刻表现出来的好的一面,某些时刻又表现出坏的一面。

正因为这样,这个人物才更贴近于生活,这个人物性格之复杂才值得我们来探究。

本文试对南希的双重性格进行分析,探析其人物形象,得出造就南希的成因。

现实中人性的善恶的界限总是不那么明显,善中有恶,恶中有善。

人性的善恶受多方面因素的影响,但人之初,性本善,无论环境多么恶劣,都无法泯灭人类本性中的善良成分,进一步联系现代社会现状,论述小说给我们现代人的启发,呼吁善良,创建和谐社会。

Abstract

Asamoderatehumanist,CharlesDickensadvocates“dogoodandtolove”.Hisnovelsarefullofemotions,havingaprofoundspiritoffraternity,promotingtheultimatevictoryofthegoodtoevil,thebeautytotheuglinessinthehumannature.Asagreatrealistwriter,CharlesDickensholdsanopinionthat“theevilmustbeperished”sothathisnovelshaveastrongcriticalspirit.Andhisnovelsarefulloftheidealismcolorof“thebadwillbepunishedandthegoodwillbeblessed”aswellas“lovealwayscanovercomehate”.OliverTwistisCharlesDickens’firstimportantnovelthatreflectsthesocialproblems.AlthoughNancyisasecondarycharacter,sheplaysanirreplaceableroleinthenovel’sdevelopment.Sheisstrugglingbetweengoodandevil,andsheisthekeycharacterwhomakesthestoryhaveahappyending.Nancyisacharacterwhohasarichandcomplexinnerworld.Shehasthetypicaldoublecharacter.Sheisnotlikeothercharactersthatjustshowgoodsideorthebad.Butatsomepoints,sheshowsthepositiveside,sometimesshowsthemeanone.Becauseofthis,thisfigureismoreclosetolife.Hercomplexcharacterisworthstudying.

ThispaperwillanalyzethedualcharactersofNancy,andcomestothecauses.Inreality,apersonisaunityofgoodandevil.Theboundaryofthehumannaturebetweengoodandevilisn’tsoclear.Sometimesthegoodhaselementsofevil,sodoesevil.Thegoodandevilinhumannatureisinfluencedbymanyfactors.Whileatthebeginningoflife,manisgoodinnature.Nomatterhowcruelthesurroundingis,goodnesswillneverbeeliminated.Connectingwhatthenovelinspiresuswiththestatusofmodernsociety,thispapercallsforgoodnesstocreateamoreharmonioussociety.

CharlesDickens,oneofthemostinfluentialnovelistsinEnglishmodernliterature.Amongtheclassicwritersinwesternliterature,hisachievementissecondtoShakespeare.Heisthefounderofcriticalrealisticliteratureinthe19thcentury.Hecreatedsomefictionalcharactersthatdeeplyimpressedtheworld.AndheisgenerallyregardedasthegreatestnovelistoftheVictorianperiod.Hisworksenjoysunprecedentedfameallthetime,especiallyhisnovelsandshortstories.Hehasalmosttriedallkindsoftheliterarygenre,whilehisfictionishisbestachievement,especiallyhisnovels.Hisnovelsnotonlyrevealthelife,butalsoevaluateandinterferewiththelife.Hestartsfromthehumanitarianismandtheartist’sconscience,exposingthedarknessofthesocietyandcriticizingitstronglysothatcauseahugeimpact.Inhisnovels,CharlesDickensadvocates“dogoodandtolove”.Hetakesanapproachthatgoodwilltriumphoverevilsometimeseveninunexpectedwaysinordertoshowhisoutlook.Thisisclearlyprovedinhisfirstsocialcriticalnovel,OliverTwist.

ItisOliverTwistthatmarkstheverybeginningofDickens’literarylife.Itishisfirstnovelthatreflectsthesocialproblems.Thisnovelisapowerfulexposureofbourgeoissociety,exposingthedarknesssidesofpeoplelivedoutofthattime.ThatitsgeneralpurposeisclearinDickens’mindcanbeseenfromhislatter-writtenpreface:

InOliverTwist,DickensdescribesallkindsofcharactersinLondon,especiallythosewholiveintheunderworld,suchasOliverTwist,Fagin,Sikes,andNancy.Intheprocessofwritingthispaper,manyfamousscholars’masterpieceshavebeenread.Therearemanyresearchesonthispoorlittleboy,OliverTwist.ThispaperisconcernedonNancy.ComparingwithOliverTwist,Nancyistrueanddifferent.Sheisstrugglingbetweengoodandevil.Sheisaunityofgoodandevil,whichreflectsthedarknessofthatsocietyandthecomplexityofhumannature.Theoutcomeisfoundasfollowing:

OliverTwisthasbeentranslatedintomanylanguagesandadaptedintomovies,TVshowsandstageplaysformanytimessinceithasbeenpublishedin1838.Manyscholarsathomeandabroadhavebeenstudyingthenovel.GilbertKeithChestertonpublishedAppreciationsandCriticismsoftheWorksofCharlesDickensin1911,GeorgeGissingcommentDickensinTheImmortalDickens,andAnnySadrinpublishedParentageandInheritanceintheNovelsofCharlesDickens.TheyanalyzeDickensandhisworksfromdifferentperspectives.ClassesinmanyuniversitiesatabroadarealsodeepintoDickens’works,amongwhichthemostfamousistheUniversityofCalifornia.TheyhavespecializedprofessorstoanalyzeDickensandhisworks.Meanwhile,thereareforumstodiscussthelatestresearchesonDickensandhisworkseveryyear.ManyscholarsathomeshowpreferencetoNancy’skindness.Theythinksheislily-whiteandkind,andreflectingthesideofkindnessinhumannature.Forexample,WangYanmentionedinAnalysisofNancy’ssideofkindnessinOliverTwist(2011:

17-18):

“Sheisonlyanordinarypeoplefromthesocialunderclass,afemalethief,butitisthestatusthatshowsherkindness.ThecharacterNancymakespeopleknowthegreatstrengthoftruenessandconscienceinthedreggysociety.Darknessandevilcan’tchangepeople’ssoul.Nancy’sforgettingherlifetosaveOliverandherunswervingloyaltytolovereflecthertruenessandkindness.”HeShunlisaid:

“Nancyisacontradictoryperson,thatistosayherkindnessintegrateswithevil,virtuewithugliness,basenesswithnobility.”“SheisdissatisfiedwithSikes’actionbutlacksthecouragetoleavehim.”ZhaoShifenmentionedinTheAnalysisofNancyinOliverTwist(2011:

“ThewriterprofoundlyexposesNancy’sinnerworld.Ononehand,sheisnaturallykind;

“Nancy’scharacteristheresultofcapitalism’sexploitation.”Obviously,therearesomanyscholarshavestudiedthedoublecharacterofNancy,whilefewworksisfromtheperspectiveofDickens’viewofhumannatureandtheauthor’sinfluencetothecausesofNancytoanalyze.ThispaperwillanalyzeNancy’sdoublecharactertoexplorethecausesandconnectthemodernsociety,callingforgoodnesstocreateamoreharmonioussociety.

Thispaperinintroductiontellsabouttheauthorandtheliteraturereview.ThefirstpartanalyzesNancy’ssideofdarkness.ThesecondpartanalyzesNancy’sgoodnature.Themostimportantpartisthethirdpart,analyzingthecausesofNancy’stragedy,whichincludesthepersonalreason,thesocialreason,andtheinfluenceoftheauthor.Thenconnectwiththemodernsociety,comestotheconclusion.
