Saccharin（糖精）istheonlytrulyman-madesweetener.Itwasdiscoveredbyaccident100yearsagoinanexperimentwithcoaltar（煤焦油）.Intheexperiment,ascientistgotsomesubstance（whichlaterheknewwassaccharin）onhisfinger.“Later,atdinner,heputhisfingerintohismouthandnoticedthesweettaste,”saysEricWalters,professorofbiochemistryattheChicagoMedicalSchool.

Containingnocalories,saccharinisnotabsorbedbythehumanbody.Itbegantobedislikedbypeopleduringthelate1970sandearly1980swhenonesetofstudiesshowedthatitcausedcancerinlaboratoryanimals.AccordingtoWalters,itisnotfairtosaccharinbecausethestudieswerenotperfect.

Morerecenttestingwithotheranimalswithsmallamountsofsaccharinhasnotrepeatedthesameresults.Evenwiththeseexperimentalresults,saccharinlabelsarestillrequiredtocarryawarningsayingithasbeenshowntocausecancerinlaboratoryanimals.In1990,saccharinwasallowedtobesoldinthemarketagain.

Becauseitishundredsoftimessweeterthantablesugar,onlyasmallamountofsaccharinisusedathome,inrestaurantsorinthefood-makingindustry.

Anothersweetenerwecommonlyuseisaspartame（甜味剂）.Itisnotsosweetassaccharin,butmuchsweeterthantablesugar.Unlikesaccharin,however,aspartamecanbeabsorbedintothebody.Itcontains4caloriespergram,thesameastablesugar.Butaspartameis180timessweeterthansugar.

Althoughaspartameisfoundinthousandsofproducts,itssafety,likesaccharin,hasstillbeenuncertain.Nevertheless,peopleallowitsuseinallfoodsanddrinks.
