Fall2010CourseDescriptionandGoals

ThiscourseisanintroductiontotheprincipleconceptsofreadinginAmerican&Britishnewspublications.Withafocusonconcepts,thiscoursepreparesstudentstoapplyjournalismtothereadingwherestudentswillnotonlybecomeawareofthegreat,controversial,andcriticalideascontainedinAmericaandBritishnewsmediareports,butalsoexaminetheinteractionsbetweenthenewsreporters’purpose,subjects,andaudienceexpectations.

ThepurposeofthiscourseistoexposestudentstoabroadspectrumofWesternnewsmedia,thought,politics,religion,philosophy,etc.,inordertogainagreaterunderstandingoftheEnglishlanguageandWesternculturaljournalism.InadditiontoanintenseexaminationofreadinginAmerican&Britishnewspublications,studentswillbeexpectedtosummarize,analyze,andevaluatethecoursematerials.

Assignmentswillconsistofexpository,personal,andpersuasivewriting,vocabularydevelopment,andresearchandanalysis.Mostwritingassignmentsandprojectswillinvolveanexplorationandanalysisbasedontheproperreadingchapters.

Asyoureadthesechallengingmaterials,younotonlywillexpandyourvocabularyandyourabilitytoextractmeaningfromsophisticatednewsreports,butalsowilllearntoinferimportantinformationaboutaudienceandpurpose,thuspreparingyourselftointerpretthecomplex,oftenveiledmessagesyouencounterinpolitics,business,andthesociety.
