　　ithadbeenthoughtthatmancannotbehappywithoutatheoryoflifeorareligion.perhapsthosewhohavebeenrenderedunhappybyabadtheorymayneedabettertheorytohelpthemtorecover,justasyoumayneedatonicwhenyouhavebeenill.butwhenthingsarenormalamanshouldbehealthywithoutatonicandhappywithoutatheory.itisthesimplethingsthatreallymatter.ifamandelightsinhiswifeandchildren,hassuccessinwork,andfindspleasureinthealternationofdayandnight,springandautumn,hewillbehappywhateverhisphilosophymaybe.if,ontheotherhand,hefindshiswifefateful,hischildren’snoiseunendurable,andtheofficeanightmare;ifinthedaytimehelongsfornight,andatnightsighsforthelightofday,thenwhatheneedsisnotanewphilosophybutanewregimen--adifferentdiet,ormoreexercise,orwhatnot.manisananimal,andhishappinessdependsonhisphysiologymorethanhelikestothink.thisisahumbleconclusion,buticannotmakemyselfdisbelieveit.unhappybusinessmen,iamconvinced,wouldincreasetheirhappinessmorebywalkingsixmileseverydaythanbyanyconceivablechangeofphilosophy.
