　　YourMajesties,YourRoyalHighnesses,LadiesandGentlemen,

　　ThegreateconomistJohnMaynardKeynesoncewrote:

“Ifeconomistscouldmanagetogetthemselvesthoughtofashumble,competentpeopleonalevelwithdentists,thatwouldbesplendid.”

　　83yearsandmuchresearchlater,wewouldperhapsaspiretobecomparedwith“meteorologists”or“doctors”,whosescientificaccomplishmentshavebeentrulyoutstandingandyethavetofacechallengesthatareratherdown-to-earth.Ourfailuretoforeseeorpreventthefinancialcrisisisasorereminderofthedangersofhubris.Trueenough,wehadworkedonmostofitsingredients.Butlikeavirusthatkeepsmutating,newdangersemergedwhenwethoughtwehadunderstoodandavoidedtheexistingones.

　　TheneedtobehumbleappliesalsotothefieldthatwasrewardedbythePrize.Recognizingthatindustriesaredifferentfromeachotherandevolverapidly,researchersinindustrialorganizationhavepatientlybuiltabodyofknowledgethathashelpedregulatorstobetterunderstandmarketpowerandtheeffectsofpolicyinterventions,andhelpedfirmstoformulatetheirstrategies.Theyhavetherebycontributedtomakingthisworldabetterworld,theeconomist’sfirstmission.Yet,thereissomuchwestillhavetolearn,andtheworldchangesfasterthanourunderstandingcankeepup.

　　Humilityisnoteasytopreservewhenreceivingsuchaprestigiousaward.AlbertCamusinhisacceptancespeechwonderedhowhe,richonlyinhisdoubtsandhisworkstillinprogress,couldcopewithbeingatthecenterofaglaringlight.Hisanswerwasthathecouldnotlivewithouthisart.ThegreatFrenchscientistHenriPoincarédescribedtheunmatchedpleasureofdiscovery:

“Thoughtisonlyaflashinthemiddleofalongnight.Butthisflashmeanseverything.”

　　Wisdomthereforeencouragesmetoreturnassoonaspossibletomylab,tothecolleaguestowhomIamindebtedforthePrize,inshorttothewonderfullifeofaresearcher.ButIshallbeprofoundlyandpermanentlygratefultotheCommitteefortheimmensehonorithasbestoweduponme,andtotheNobelFoundationandSwedenfortheirastoundingmissionofdrawingattentiontoScienceyearafteryear.
