ADMISSIONSREQUIREMENTS

ADMISSIONSREQUIREMENTS

AllapplicantstoNewYorkFilmAcademyprogramsandworkshopsmusthaveahighschooldiplomaoracceptableequivalentbythetimeofthecoursestartdate.ThereisnominimumGPArequired,howeverstudentsmustspeakEnglish,andexpressaseriousdesiretoexploretheartandcraftofmovingpictures.StudentsapplyingforOneandTwo-YearProgramsmaybeinterviewedbyAdmissionsCommitteememberbyphoneorinperson.

Allstudentsmustpossessthedriveandcommitmentnecessarytocompletearigorous,totalimmersionprogram.Theymustbeabletocommunicatewellandworkcollaborativelywithothersinanartisticenvironment.

Studentsmaybedeclinedadmissioniftheworkshoptheyareapplyingfordoesnothavespaceavailableforthedateselectedforattendance,oriftheyhavenotearnedahighschooldiplomaoracceptableequivalent.StudentswhodonotspeakEnglishwillalsobedeclinedadmissiontotheworkshops,giventhatallofinstructionintheAcademyisconductedinEnglish.Studentswhoareunabletomeetthefinancialobligationsoftheworkshoponemonthpriortothestartdatewillalsobedeclinedadmission.

MFAADMISSIONSPOLICY

AnidealapplicantfortheNewYorkFilmAcademyMasterofFineArtsprogramsmustdemonstrateasincerepassionformotionpicturestorytelling,theabilityanddesiretocollaboratewithotherartistsinacreativeenvironment,andmustsubmitacreativeportfolio（SupportingMaterials）thatillustratetheapplicant'sabilitytoundertakegraduatelevelstudy,acceleratedleveloftalentandpotentialforsuccesswithintheprofession.

CandidatesforadmissiontotheMasterofFineArtsprogramsmustpossessaBachelor'sDegreefromapost-secondaryinstitutionrecognizedbytheUnitedStatesDepartmentofEducation.Noparticularmajororminorisrequiredasaprerequisiteforadmission,butapplicantswithastrongbackgroundinstorytelling,and/ortheartsarepreferred.WhileGPAwillbetakenintoconsideration,andisanimportantcomponentoftheadmission'sprocess,thestrengthofthecandidate'screativeportfolioisalsoasignificantdeterminingfactorforadmission.Specialattentionwillbegiventogradesassignedinareasofstudyrelatedtoanyaspectsofstorytellingartssuchasthevisualarts,creativewriting,theaterarts,finearts,performingarts,andthehumanities.

ApplicantswhowishtopursueaMasterofFineArtsDegreewhohavereceivedaBachelor'sDegree（orequivalentdegree）fromaforeigninstitutionmustsubmitacredentialscomparisonevaluationofallundergraduateworkinordertoverifytheirBachelor'sDegreeequivalency.Alltranscriptsandportfoliomaterialsdocumentingpriorcollegiateexperience（includingcredentialscomparisonevaluation,ifapplicable）willbeevaluatedbytheAcademyfacultyandAdmissionsCommittee.

EnglishProficiencyRequirement

SinceallclassesattheNewYorkFilmAcademyareconductedinEnglish,studentsmustbeabletocommunicateclearlyinwrittenandspokenEnglish.

ApplicantsforwhomEnglishisnotthefirstornativelanguageshouldsubmitoneofthefollowingtoverifyEnglishproficiency:

∙AnofficialtranscriptverifyingcompletionofsecondaryeducationinwhichEnglishistheprimarylanguageofcommunication

∙TOEFL（TestofEnglishasaForeignLanguage）scoreof520orhigher（190forcomputer-basedtestor68forinternet-basedtest）;IELTS5.5,ortheequivalent

∙AreportfromavalidEnglishLanguageSchoolverifyingcompletionofcourselevelequivalenttoa520Paper-basedTOEFLScore.

Inthecasethatthedocumentationisnotavailable,aNewYorkFilmAcademyrepresentativewilluseaphoneorin-personinterviewasanopportunitytodeterminewhetherornottheapplicanthasthenecessaryEnglishlanguageproficiency.

Interview

Aspartoftheadmissionsprocess,MFAapplicantsmayberequiredtohaveaninterviewbyphoneorinpersonwithaNewYorkFilmAcademyrepresentative.Thepurposeoftheinterviewistoidentifytheapplicant'sgoalsandpriorexperience.Theidealapplicanthasapassionforstorytelling,creativeexpression,andartisticcollaboration.Theinterviewisalsoanopportunitytoreviewthecurriculumoftheprogramwiththeapplicantandtoensurethats/hefullyunderstandsthelevelofcommitmentrequiredtosuccessfullycompletethedegree.

Transcripts

TranscriptsfromprioracademicinstitutionsmustbesealedofficialtranscriptssentdirectlyfromtheinstitutioninquestiontotheNewYorkFilmAcademy'sRegistrar'sOffice.Transcripts,whichhavebeenopened,photocopied,oraugmentedinanyway,willnotbeacceptedasevidenceofprioracademicaccomplishment.ProspectivestudentswhofailtoprovidetheadmissionscommitteewithapplicablesealedacademictranscriptswillbedeclinedadmissiontotheAcademy.

NarrativeStatement

Thenarrativestatementshallbeamatureandself-reflectiveessay（2-3typedpages）detailingtheapplicant'sreasonsforpursuingadegreeinthemotionpicturearts.Theessayshouldtakeintoaccounttheindividual'shistory,formativecreativeexperiences,contemporaryinfluencesandinspirations,andpersonalartisticdreams.

CreativePortfolio/SupportingMaterials:

Applicantsmustsubmitoneortwoexamplesoforiginalworkthatbestdemonstratetheirtalentandabilityascreativeindividuals.Allfilm/videosubmissionsmustbesubmittedonDVDorhyperlinkwherethesubmissioncanbeviewed,regardlessofimagecaptureformat（20minutesmaximum）.Applicantsmayalsosubmitsupportingmaterialssuchasslidesorphotographs（10maximum）.

Creativesamplesareacceptedinvariousstagesofdevelopment,orascompletedwork.Examplesofworkcanrangefromdrawings,conceptualillustrations,storyboards,designs,photographs,threedimensionalmodels,ordigitallygeneratedimages.Studentsmaychoosetosubmitatypedscreenplayorshortstory（10pagemaximum）.

Whilethecreativeportfolioisnormallytheprimarydeterminingfactorforadmission,theNewYorkFilmAcademyunderstandsthatmanyapplicantshaveattainedapplicableskillsfromvariousprofessionalexperiencesinpublishing,entertainmentlaw,theater,onlinebusinessventures,architecture,etc.Often,withtheseapplicants,itisthenarrativestatementandresumethatrevealthemostaboutanapplicant'squalifications,andpotentialforsuccessintheprogram,totheAdmissions0Committee.

CreditTransferPolicy

ItisthegeneralpolicyofNewYorkFilmAcademyMasterofFineArtsDegreeProgramsneithertoaccepttransfercreditsfromotheracademicpostsecondaryinstitutions,nortoconsiderpriorexperientiallearningforapplicationtowardanydegreeornon-degreecourseofstudy.StudentsdesiringcreditforpreviousacademicworkortrainingmaysubmitawrittenrequestforsuchcredittotheRegistrar,alongwithanysupportingdocumentation（e.g.transcriptsorsyllabi.）.Ifcreditisawarded,thelengthand/orrequirementsoftheprogramwillbeadjustedappropriately,atthediscretionoftheAcademicDeaninconsultationwiththeDepartmentChair.

Furthermore,theNewYorkFilmAcademymakesnorepresentationwhatsoeverthatcreditsearnedintheMasterofFineArtsDegreeProgramoranynon-degreeprogramorworkshopoperatedbytheNewYorkFilmAcademywillbeacceptedorappliedtowardthecompletionofanydegreeorcertificatebyanyotherpostsecondaryinstitution.Theacceptanceoftransfercreditsisalwaysgovernedbythereceivingschool.

BasisforDecliningAdmission

AstudentwillbedeclinedadmissiontotheAcademyiftheAdmissionsCommitteedeterminesthatheorshedoesnotmeettherequirementsoftheAdmissionsPolicy,orifnospaceisavailableintheMasterofFineArtsDegreeProgram.StudentswhodonotspeakEnglishwillalsobedeclinedadmission,giventhatallinstructionisconductedinEnglish.Studentswhoareunabletomeetthefinancialobligationsoftheworkshoponemonthpriortothestartdatewillalsobedeclinedadmission.
