Tobaccowasfirstusedbythepeopleofpre-ColumbianAmericas.NativeAmericansapparentlycultivatedtheplantandsmokeditinpipesformedicinalandceremonialpurposes.

ChristopherColumbusbroughtafewtobaccoleavesandseedswithhimbacktoEurope,butmostEuropeansdidn’tgettheirfirsttasteoftobaccountilthemid-16thcentury,whenadventurersanddiplomatslikeFrance’sJeanNicot—forwhomnicotineisnamed—begantopopularizeitsuse.TobaccowasintroducedtoFrancein1556,Portugalin1558,Spainin1559,andEnglandin1565.

ThefirstsuccessfulcommercialcropwascultivatedinVirginiain1612byEnglishmanJohnRolfe.Withinsevenyears,itwasthecolony’slargestexport.Overthenexttwocenturies,thegrowthoftobaccoasacashcropfueledthedemandinNorthAmericaforslavelabor.

Atfirst,tobaccowasproducedmainlyforpipe-smoking,chewing,andsnuff.Cigarsdidn’tbecomepopularuntiltheearly1800s.Cigarettes,whichhadbeenaroundincrudeformsincetheearly1600s,didn’tbecomewidelypopularintheUnitedStatesuntilafterthecivilwar,withthespreadof“Bright”tobacco,auniquelycuredyellowleafgrowninVirginiaandNorthCarolina.Cigarettesalessurgedagainwiththeintroductionofthe“WhiteBurley”tobaccoleafandtheinventionofthefirstpracticalcigarette-makingmachine,sponsoredbytobaccobaronJamesBuchanan“Buck”Duke,inthelate1880s.

Thenegativehealtheffectsoftobaccowerenotinitiallyknown;infact,mostearlyEuropeanphysicianssubscribedtotheNativeAmericanbeliefthattobaccocanbeaneffectivemedicine.

Bytheearly20thcentury,withthegrowthincigarettesmoking,articlesaddressingthehealtheffectsofsmokingbegantoappearinscientificandmedicaljournals.In1930,researchersinCologne,Germany,madeastatisticalcorrelationbetweencancerandsmoking.Eightyearslater,Dr.RaymondPearlofJohnsHopkinsUniversityreportedthatsmokersdonotliveaslongasnon-smokers.By1944,theAmericancancersocietybegantowarnaboutpossibleilleffectsofsmoking,althoughitadmittedthat“nodefiniteevidenceexists”linkingsmokingandlungcancer.

Astatisticalcorrelationbetweensmokingandcancerhadbeendemonstrated;butnocausalrelationshiphadbeenshown.Moreimportantly,thegeneralpublicknewlittleofthegrowingbodyofstatistics.

Thatchangedin1952,whenReader’sDigestpublishedanarticledetailingthedangersofsmoking.Theeffectofthearticlewasenormous:

similarreportsbeganappearinginotherperiodicals,andthesmokingpublicbegantotakenotice.Thefollowingyear,cigarettesalesdeclinedforthefirsttimeinovertwodecades.
