Bytheearly19thcentury,severalpermanently-basedcircuseswerelocatedinlargerEuropeancities.Inaddition,smalltravelingshowsmovedfromtowntotownincoveredwagonsinwhichtheperformerslived.Thetravelingshowswereusuallysimpleaffairs,featuringafiddlerortwo,ajuggler,aropedancer,andafewacrobats.Intheearlycircusessuchperformersgavetheirshowsinopenspacesandtookupacollectionforpay;later,theperformersusedelaborateshows.Intheearlierpartofthe19thcenturyamainfeatureofthepermanentcircusprogramwasthepresentationofgramsthatincludeddisplaysofhorsemanship.Throughoutthe19thcenturythecircusevolvedinprogrammingandmanagement.Initially,trainedhorseandhorsemanshipperformancesdominatedcircuses,butropedancing,juggling,acrobaticacts,wild-animalacts,andclowningwereallintroducedwithinthefirstfewdecades.Theflyingtrapeze,animportantpartofthemoderncircus,wasnotinventeduntil1858,andthestreetparadeandsideshowdidnotbecomestandardcircuseventsuntillaterinthe19thcentury.Tentsarebelievedtohavecomeintouseinthe1820s,butitisuncertainwhethertheyappearedfirstinEuropeorintheUnitedStates.
